Oh yeah. And I generally hate pedals.
We always wrestle with compressors for guitar live. It's hard to get
the compression we want without the life all going out of the music.
I have a pair of DBX 160 VU's that come close to the sound I
want if I keep the ratio really low. Close, but not perfect.
What I have always wanted to hear is the trick we do in the studio
where we mult the return (on tape) or copy the track (in a DAW) and
squeeze one track and don't squeeze the other. Play with the
relative levels a bit, and maybe some EQ and you can get some
sterling tones. (btw, this is not panned left and right, this is a mono
effect I am speaking of) I used to use my Carl Martin compressor
this way by using the 4 inputs on a Matchless DC-30. Run the
guitar into the high gain input, then run a shorty from the low-gain
input on the same channel to the compressor, then run the comp
out to the other channel in. This got the signal to both channels,
one side compressed and one not compressed. I got some great
tones, but it was pretty cumbersome to setup and adjusting the
volume got pretty involved...
The Barber Tone Press, does it all in one box. You get volume,
blend, and compression. What I do is run the blend up to full
compressor and then adjust the compressor knob until I am hearing
quite a bit of squeeze going on, and then pull the blend back until
I get just the right amount of uncompressed tone going through.
Sounds flippin' amazing. I generally leave it on all the time.
BTW, this thing really helps heavy music, it's are not just for
country like a lot of people think compressors are for live.
With the Tone Press you can make even metal sounds much more
massive and studly.
Works equally well on all my guitars and all my amps. Even the
Hiwatt, and that thing hates pedals.
Oh, and it's 139.00... Get one. You won't believe it.

I'm actually very impressed by the Leslie emulation on the GNX4. I had a
bit of a fiddle last night with making some sounds. I hooked up by Behringer
FCB1010 so that one of the controller pedals controls the speed of the leslie.
Wonderfully the Leslie refuses to adjust speed instantly. If you start from
the slowest speed and ramp straight up to full speed on the pedal, it takes
quite a few seconds for the Leslie to actually speed up, just like a real
one would. There are various parameters I'm yet to fiddle with which I'm
pretty confident will yeild an even better sound. Currently the pitch shift
is such that it is difficult to recognise an actual note when the Leslie
is at top speed, but there are a number of tweaks I can do, and I'm sure
I'll find the right setting. The trick is that the top modulation speed needs
to be jjjjust the right intensity so that the note is still obvious, but
only just. ;o) Last night I was having too much fun playing to spend enough
time tweaking. ;o) I'm having a ball!

DC,
Sounds like you like it even more than you did before.
I have been at odds using a Vox Tonelab on the gig.
It has millions of amps and effects but ... one compressor
that is average to poor in my opinion. Like you say,
it sucks the life out of the sound almost always.
I might give that bad boy a try since it's not too much
scratch

------=_NextPart_000_014C_01C5CF7E.1A553D70--The Jfet preamp circuit is very flattering to any mic I've ever used with it
and the compressor is extremely transparent, with a bit of sweetness when
ridden hard. Nice EQ as well. It's one of those magic boxes that just makes
a signal sound better passing through the circuitry.
