Aaron,
What is the recommendation for video card on XP? I need to run three
monitors. I'm currently using the Matrox to run two.
thanks!

These should load up in WinXP w/o and drivers from Matrox, and that's how I
recommend you do it. I'm posting this mainly for the Win ME/98 crowd
though.... seemed to play much better in that OS. This is not the same as
the 32Mb version of this model but if you've been counting pennies to go
Dual Monitor or already have one and need a backup, this is probably as good
as it's gonna get for those situations.
PS: I only started buying from this vendor recently, but I've had no
troubles at all so far and they deal with older (ahem.. vintage) computer
parts mostly that I can see - which is perfect for a Parisite.

------=_NextPart_000_001D_01C67153.31B02710--Spent the day loading and registering software. At one point, I was about
1/3 of the way through and somehow encountered a C37 error. You do not want
a C37 error. C37 error = suckage to the nth degree because, in my case, my
CDR drivers cold not be initialized by windows and this sorta put a dent in
the software loading routine. After warring with the C37 error for about 2
hours, I had to restore from a Ghost image and start over with the whole
enchilada.
All applications, drivers and VSTi's are working properly. I'm ghosting this
puppy before I go to bed tonight. Tomorrow we'll see if this ordeal has
solved the problem with crackling audio in SX when using 4 x UAD-1 cards.
I've reconfigured a lot of stuff and hopefully I've got my PCI bus overload
situation ussed...................hopefully.
Stay tuned for possible gnashing of teeth/rending of garments
tomorrow.........wait.....it's already today for some of you
guys..........so whatever.
;o)Jamie,
I'm sold!!! Those Dual core Macs (iMacs 7 Powerbooks) are killer!! They had
Logic Audio Pro 7.2 loaded on the iMac 20inch, and man!! I never seen Logic
run like that before!! Smooth, smooth smooth... The demo was an audio/video
post mock up. Slick!!
No offense to Dual G5 owners, but MAcs with the Dual-core processors are
in a different league. No kidding. Now, Logic feels more sleeker.. Even on
our Dual 2.5's OSx, Logic Audio 7,just does seem perky, smooth..But, on a
dual-core intel, different animal. I URGE all Mac Logic Audio users to get
a Dual Core Intel Mac..
Part2: Then they rebotted the iMAc into WinXP Pro..They did not have a Pro
Audio app on it, however every could tell that this iMac was running WinXp
pro faster than any of us has ssen is good while..
One could only imagine if Apple would've gone with AMD and had Dual core
Opterons..!!! Yikes!!
All in all, for those of us who want to run Logic audio Pro, as well as run
or PC DAW apps and plugs, getting into a Mac now makes good sense..
Take care

>That 20' iMac is slick, but I have a feeling your going to want the PCI slots;
) I think that there are going to be some really cool products from Apple
between now and January 2007.
Apple has used the current line of computer housings for all of the new Intel
models. However, I'm betting that Apple will go to some new slick design
on the Intel towers. It will be interesting to see what they do. I wish
they would put in 2 or 3 standard PCI slots and 4 or 5 express slots, but
I know that will never happen.
Let me look in to my crystal ball, I see Apple announcing new iBooks on Tuesday
May 9th. When you follow Apple like I have you start to know their approximate
release schedule. Well that's my guess anyways, we'll see if I'm right.
If I only had extra money to throw in to their stock at the right time!

<BLOCKQUOTE type=3D"cite"><PRE wrap=3D"">I'm recording a demo =
for this band called Lhasa Vector, and we
started setting up & getting tones last night... kinda
interesting the way we're doing the drums, but I'll get into
that in a minute. Anyway, so we're setting up the primary
guitarist's rig, and we're trying a Marshall 4x12 cabinet, and
also a Mesa 4x12 cabinet... I have no idea of the speaker
models in each, but he says he likes certain characteristics of
both, so can we try a/b-ing them? I say sure, no prob... he has
a Mesa triple rectumfryer head that has two speaker outs, so he
can play through both cabs at the same time & we'll use the
same kind of signal chain on each one to record a couple test
files so he can hear the difference between the two cabinets.
So, we record him playing a bit, each cabinet mic'ed with an
Audix i5 going through a channel on the Focusrite Red-8... the
Mesa cab is definitely somewhat louder than the Marshall - not
by tons, but it's apparent. It's also brighter & tighter.
So, as we're playing back each track & I'm going back & forth
between them: "Here's the Mesa... here's the Marshall... here's
both... 'both' sounds pretty good.", I'm noticing that the
Marshall speaker sounds really "soft" or "loose" - not just
compared to the Mesa cab, but in it's own right. Now, he likes
the way this is sounding, and he's saying he prefers it to the
Mesa... like I said, it's a little softer in tone, a little
less tight, and definitely "fuzzier" (though not "ready to be
re-coned kinda fuzzy".
Anyway, I say: "Let's, just for grins, try something, OK?, I
want to see what another speaker in that Marshall cab sounds
like... so I take the mic off the Mesa, put it on the speaker
right next to the one we're micing in the Marshall cab, and
have him play again... lo & behold, the other speaker sounds
different... not necessarily better, but definitely somewhat
different. I asked him if he'd had to replace any of the
speakers, or had any of the speakers re-coned lately & he
said: "no, never"... bought the cabinet new, has had it for a
few years, and has never had to have it worked on.
Bottom line, the other speaker is a little bit tighter-sounding
& less "fuzzy" than the first one - there is absolutely no
perceiveable difference in volume between them, and the
waveforms are right at the same levels; and in fact, when I
threw one mic out of phase for a second while he was playing,
they nulled to the point where I couldn't hear it at all, but
there's definitely a difference in tone.
In any event, he likes the sound of the combination of the two
speakers, so that's what we're going with, but my point is:
CHECK ALL THE SPEAKERS! I know there's been times when I've
done this, and also times when I've mic'ed up a cab, said:
"He-EEYYY that sounds pretty good right there!" and gone with
it... I wonder if I had checked all the speakers in any of
those events, we might have ended up saying: "DAAAAAMN, that's
even BETTER!"
My only regret at this stage is that the other guitar player
really liked that i5/Mucusrite Red combination he was hearing,
but unfortunately, I only have two i5's, and two channels
of "red". We didn't dial in his sounds last night because at
first he said he wanted to do his parts as overdubs once the
first guitar was laid down, but as we were wrapping up for the
evening, he changed his mind & now wants to do them at the same
time. I have other mics & pres, of course, but I dunno if we're
gonna get something he's happy with now that he's heard that
particular combination... the saving grace might be that
although he's got the same kind of amp head as the first guy,
he'll be using the Mesa cab, and he says his overall tone is
different from the first guy's too... he's trying to fit into
the freqency range between the bass & the first guitar. Since
these guys de-tune a step & a half, that's gonna be a pretty
low tonal range... I'm thinking maybe I wish I had another TLM-
103 at this point, too LOL if he's going that low I might
need something like that for his tone, just so it's not a big,
muddy, mess! I guess we'll find out today (fingers crossed).
Anyway, I said I'd mention the drum thing 'cause it's kinda
different... the drummer loves his Roland E-kit, which he
incorporates with some live cymbals, as well. So we're using
3 live cymbals, plus live hi-hats, 3 e-kit cymbals, and the e-
kit for kick, snare, and 4 toms (one tom pad plugged into the
hi-hat trigger port, with the brain reprogrammed to strike a
floor tom MIDI note instead of a hi-hat MIDI note). We're
micing the hat with an Earthworks TC-30 (tried a Rode NT-5 too,
but the Earthworks won out by a large margin due to being less
midrangey, having a ton more "air"; and also being an omni, and
as a result, picking up more room ambience). OH's are TLM-
103's, and no, you can't hear the "thwack" on the pads at all
once you get the audio from the e-kit going. The downside to
all this is that the e-kit only has stereo outs, so we're
tracking the MIDI output as well so we can go back & re-trigger
individual tracks for kick, snare, etc for mixing purposes.
So, the stereo outs that are being recorded for the time being
could be considered "scratch" drums, I guess. lol
Just thought I'd mention the drum thing too, because I recall a
few months back someone had posted a question about had anyone
done something like this & how did it work out, etc.

I didn't know him or his family personally. This info was forwarded to me by
a friend of his whom I met here on this NG, but who no longer posts here.
From other folks I've met who knew him, I have been told that his name was
Steven Marshall (as in Marshall Time Modulator-ring a bell?) and that the
name Stephen St. Croix was a pen name..

He is the only reason I bought Paris. No one could buy that guy's
opinions. He said what he thought and lived as he spoke.
Proud, rude, uncorruptible, out of control in a controlled way, and
brilliant as a quasar.
There is no one to replace him.

>Hey LaMont,
Sounds cool!
The demo dude from Apple doing the recent road show said his current
(believe it was the fastest) 15" Intel Macbook is aprox equal the
performance of a dual 2GHZ G5, from his experience running Logic. I tend
to believe him.
Which means when I get a MacBook with the next Intel chip rev in late
06, early 07, it will likely be as fast or faster than my dual 2.5GHZ G5
- Which is fine with me. :^)
Both current and future Macbooks will be plenty fast for Logic and very
portable.
I won't need the Intel iMac or PowerMac since my G5 is more than fast
enough for Logic and can keep rockin' for the next few years at least.
Cheers,
-Jamie

>Woah...........sorry.......brain isn't in gear yet...........not enough
coffee.......I'm running SX on SP2 with this card right now, but it's a
basically *stock* version that I Ghosted prior to doing the system
optimization tweaks which involved many *regedits* and disabling certain of
the system services. All three cards ran fine on SP1 with these same tweaks
done. SP2 has added a few new things to the system services. I didn't know
which of these I needed to turn off so I left them alone.........so I
repeat, I'm running the Multiface PCI on an unoptomized version of SP2 right
now. Would the version of the PCI card make a difference due to optimization
tweaks?
Thanks,

You'd have to go into antique car restoration or stamp collecting. ;^)

PS. I'll know in a couple of days if Logic 7.2.1 will finally "simply
work all the time." Stay tuned...

Antique cars???...............hmmmmm..........well.....I've been needing a
Lamborghini Miura since the 60's. I've been needing it *really* bad.......as
in *jonesin'* for it.
It may not be an antique quite yet, but like me, it's old and disconitnued
amd it looks a lot like me.

>Here's the info on this, directly from the RME site:
<begin paste>
The Hammerfall DSP system with PCI card does not work correctly
on a few computers. Unsuccessful boot initialization shows the
following symptoms:
The PCI card is not found by the system during boot-up. It does
not appear as Multimedia Device in the list of PCI devices, nor
in Windows' device manager.
The hammer symbol does not show up in the Systray of Windows
2000/XP. The Settings dialog is not being loaded, because the
card (the HDSP system) is not present. The mixer symbol
(TotalMix) shows up in any case.
The Settings dialog remains empty (Mac OS) or shows 'Error'
(Windows 98).
The system does not work (ASIO error etc.).
In all cases it is the same error. Directly after switching on
the computer the power supply ramps up its output voltages. But
already during the ramp up several components begin to draw high
currents and cause voltage fluctuations. This can cause the FPGA
on the HDSP-PCI card to hang. As a consequence, the card is
virtually dead and cannot be detected by the computer nor
initialized.
<end paste>
You can read all about it here:
http://www.rme-audio.com/english/faq/hdsp_pci.htm
That page also shows (if you scroll further down) pictures of
the mod, if you want to do it yourtself, but I wouldn't
recommend it vs. $40 & a swap of your card for a factory refurb
WITH a warranty.
Check also their hardware incompatibility list & see if any of
this applies to your setup:

>That makes sense from what I'm experiencing. 1014 is working fine here. I've
read on some forums that it is possible top go up to 1015b, but I'm going to
stay where I am unless I start having significant problems. or some kind. I
really appreciate your help with this Dave.
Last night I pushed the system to the absolute max and once I exceeded 100%,
some major distortion started happening. After I backed it down to around
90%, the distortion continued. I backed it down again to about 70% and the
distortion *still* continued. I had saved this project under a different
name because I knew I would be experimenting with it so I finally had to
abandon it and go back to the original project. I ramped up the plugin count
again to around 92% without any problems and it ran like that flawlessly,
looped for a couple of hours. Eventually the system froze up, but there
could be other reasons for this since all my system services are active
right now with 3463537548576 little applets running in the BG. The moral to
this story is that on a 4 card system, it might be advisable to keep the
UAD-1 CPU resources to around 90% max to to avoid the possibility of
corrupting a project. This would be something like 30 LA-2A's or a huge
number of any other combination of UAD-1 processors. I figure if I need this
many processors, I'm probably doing something wrong anyway. It's really the
principle of the thing with me..........and by gawd........if I have 4 x
UAD-1 cards, I should be able to use 'em all and achieve wretched excess
when/if I want to.........right?

Thanks for the heads up on this. It doesn't look like I'm in the danger zone
on my computer hardware, but I'm going to check my PCI card version later
today. Better to be safe. If it's good, I guess I'll just tweak this puppy
one change at a time and then try to reboot SX after each tweak until I find
the culprit tweak(s) that are slarking my Steiny dongle.. Shouldn't take
more than three days

I think any of the bios versions from 1013 (the first bios for dual
core operation) and 1015 would be safe... the only differences appear
to be updates to accommodate new CPU's.

misunderstood - I thought you meant you were getting card errors
(i.e.: when you open SX, you don't have the Multiface available
for i/o & there's no playback heard).
If it's just the USB key not being recognized, and you're
getting the error window when you try to open SX, try
pulling it out & reinserting they key until you see the little
red light inside flash a couple of times instead of staying
steady-red... you may have to do this a time or three. Every now
& then I still have to do this, and I plan to load a USB PCI
card that I have, but I'm laothe to change anything until I'm
done with this current sesson I'm working on. Just pull it out &
reinsert it a few times until the led flashes, then
click "Retry" on the error window & see if that works for you.
I have no idea why it sometimes boots up & recognizes the key
right off the bat, and sometimes I have to do this... it makes
no difference if anything else is plugged into a USB port of
not, it's totally random. Anyway, try that & lemme know if it
works.

and very nearly successfully tried to hijack my date. Right in front of me.
She resisted until she heard about the drive up highway 101 in the Italian

I remind her of that quite often. I knew he had been sick but hadn't emailed

useful--don't keep copies of everything you write, because most of it isn't
that good and if you need to you can always find a copy of it later. It will
just clutter up your house.
Sad that he is now where we all some day shall be,

>Actually Deej, you might want to reconsider. The new generation of Intel processors
(the Core Duo) are a brand new architecture. Probably the biggest switch
by Intel since maybe the PIII. They massively shortened the pipeline, did
their usual upgrade on the branch prediction (which is how Intel covers up
for some of their 'greatest hits' bad design decisions), finally made the
vector unit 128 bits wide, and did at least some work to help out with the
memory subsystem. At the very least AMD once again really has some serious
competition from the bottom to the top of the market. So go get a Mac ;-)

He might have been a session player......I don't know. Is there someone on
the credits named Steven Marshall by chance. That would be him.
BTW, here's a link that references his connection to that album, though
vaguely.

Notice the board behind him. I asked him once what kind of board he used and
he replied that he used a custom modded Midas. I wonder if that's the sound
we're hearing in Paris..............maybe the DSP is modelled on this
board???

>Jamie, I'm really leaning towards going with Logic 7.2. You seem quite knowledgeable
about the app and it's performance. I am considering going with a laptop
as I am on the road quite a bit and having the "studio" with me would prove
quite useful.
I am considering a Macbook Pro 2.0 or 2.1 with a gig of memory. In your estimation,
would this suffice running 7.2 comfortably? Would there be any other benefits
from running it on a G5?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
