>I would not worry about SX4. It works like a champ for me. There is
always going to be a small percentage of people for whom good software
does not work. Are you generally one of those?
If you go to the forums you will hear a lot about how bad SX4 is. Some
of those people are having real problems. That's why they are on the
forum. The others like to complain and that's why they are there. The
rest of us are making music.
OTOH this forum is a special place where we complain about not having
Paris to complain about any more.

I've been wanting to get something for a while to do remote recording of
sound effects and the like in half decent quality, and also something for
jotting down song ideas, and then I came across this little gem and was like
"Woha! That's the one!".
Just wondering if anybody has actually used one and what they're like...
Cheers,
Kim.Kim, you may or may not know that my real job is as a location sound
recordist in Sydney.
A lot of the guys are buying these thing just for that reason, as a reliable
back up recorder.
They are reliable and sound great.

that to pretty much seal the deal. I looked at the H4 also, and with the
X/Y stereo pair that's GOT to be a handy thing, but I'm not sure it will
fit into this month's bugdet, plus the PS-04 also seems to have some very
funky "toys" in the way of the drum machine and bass section. I have a 1
hour bus ride to and from work and I'm imagining that while everybody else
listens to their IPods, I can write drum beats and bass lines for an entire
song and quickly jot down the melody on the mic when I get off the bus while
nobody can hear me. ;o) The H4 looks like by far the better recorder, but
I'm thinking if the mic in the PS-04 sounds decent then I can do an aweful
lot with it.
I don't suppose you (or anybody else) has played with the programming abilities
of the drum/bass sequencing. Especially with bass lines I'm kinda fussy with
them being what I want in the song rather than some generic pattern when
writing the melodies, so I'm hoping it can deal with me inputting note for
note sequences. I can (though would obviously rather not) deal with a cludgy
interface if I must as I have an hour on the bus to get a line down. The
critical thing is whether I can specify timing and notation as I do it. From
my read of the manual it seems pretty programmable, albeit with a lot of
pattern options if I want to go that way on some tunes, but I perhaps haven't
read far enough yet to know for sure.
Cheers,
Kim.

in both channels except in one channel there is room ambience/reverb and
in the other none.
It's a great effect because the instrument seems to stay centered in the
mix yet have a stereo image to it.
So what's going on in the brain here. What is it our ears are really hearing.
Is it making our brain hear the instrument in 2 acoustic spaces making it
much more interesting with this effect?
It's a great trick. I just want to know what you guys think.Speaking of this kind of thing, play the song, Eminence Front by The Who and
play with the pan knob.

>It's a great trick. I just want to know what you guys think.Panned stereo reverb. It's possible to do some cool things with mono delays
set upt to provide side-to-side reflections and and a stereo reverb with a
predelay control to control front-to-back positioning. You can get
ridculously anal about this stuff and if you're not careful, you can take a
perfectly good mix and **** it up really quick.

> It's a great trick. I just want to know what you guys think.but what's it doing when you only have one channel with the verb and the other
is dry of the same signalI do work on a laptop, and given I now work kinda in an audio ish field I
could get away with having something like that loaded up. The trick is however
they are difficult to work with on a bus, and I imagine that I would only
have a chance to quickly spend 5 minutes here and there doing it. On the
other hand the laptop may let me "get away" with more as I'd look to the
untrained eye as if I was doing work instead of "playing with his little
box" again. ;o)
I'd still much rather something like this on the bus though. I could always
leave a card reader at work and perhaps transfer the tracks onto some multitrack
program for further work. It's a thought. I'd also though kinda like to keep
the tracks off the laptop as it's a work machine and admin staff can access
it. It would be ideal if the box provided some kind of midi sync and I could
incorporate both, however there's no MIDI on the PS-04 it seems.
Cheers,
Kim.

>Just random observations. The construction guys renovating our offices had
the local classic rock station on. Haven't listened to anything like that
in years.
- Peral Jam is by far the most boring band to come out of Seattle in the
90's, but the only one who can get on a classic rock station, so they made
most of the money. The Screaming Trees, Alice in CHains, Mudhoney, Soundgarden,
and half a dozen others were better bands with better songs but don't fit
the format.
- Eddie Van Halen on their first record was a staggeringly good but also
tasteful guitar player. And there's something just joyful about the way he
played back then. It was lost as time went on but he's a pleasure to listen
to from that era.
- Angus Young has some devestating vibrato.
- There's nothing in this world short of a trailer truck of Saltines or Randy
Travis that positively screams CRACKER quite as loudly as More Than A Feeling
by Boston. There's no sheet music for that song 'cuase it's so white the
notes are unreadable.
- I will never get why the Steve Miller Band is so popular.
- If any band can give Van Halen a run for their money in the 'We didn't
used to suck but boy to we now' category it would be ZZ Top.
Opinions?

Said the white boy...
heh heh
Sorry couldn't resist...
I wish classic rock would all go to the bottom of the
deep blue sea...
Then radio would have to come up with new music to play,
and hey, people would even write more new music!
Wow, it would be like a whole MOVEMENT or something...
Nah... just a dream
DCZZTop sucks now because of their own dumb choices of style. Eddie has been
ravaged by alcohol and just can't play.
Billy Gibbons is still amazing like Angus Young but his taste has gone from
genius (Deguello, Rhythmeen) to crap (Mescalero, XXX).Its offical! My transplant is on for July the 6th.

It was actually interesting to listen to all of the 70's and 80's era recordings,
even just on a boom box through a sheet of drywall. The older the tracks
get the less busy they sound (in general of course, the Queen and Boston
tracks are thick as molasses), but they definitely have some balls that is
lacking in the newer recordings. I don't think that technology, I think it's
style. Still, fun to hear. Now back to your regularly scheduled electronica
programming.

I am so with you on Steve Miller, in fact, I would disagree with you on
one point . . . I think Steve Miller Band screams CRACKER way louder than
Boston. I had just moved my band to Portland in late '73 and the local
stations were playing "The Joker" so often that my gag reflex barely had a
chance to relax from the last play when they'd play it again.
Unfortunately, I think I do understand the appeal . . . it's predictable . .
.. it's easy listening with a rock drumbeat. It is to music what McDonalds
is to food. It's sweet, fatty, salty, and soft enough not to require much
chewing. The motto of the American consumer is "Please, Don't Make Me
Think!" (Politicians know this and use it continuously, but that's another
discussion)
Not to solo out Steve Miller -- this appeal to the lowest common
denominator seems to be true of most popular music, whether it's Classic
Rock or the latest in Hippity Hop. How often does something truly creative,
unique, or even interesting break through on the airwaves?
Love AC/DC in their Bon Scott period ("Highway to Hell" is in my top
ten rock songs of all time). AC/DC with Brian what's-his-name . . . not so
interesting. He's a good screamer, but not much character.
Similarly, I liked Van Halen with Dave Lee Roth. Hot music, very
intersting vocals. Sammy Hagar . . . ? YAWN!
I think a lot of great bands deteriorate into boring parodies of
themselves after achieving worldwide success and wealth. I think it's one
of the hazards of getting rich off of one's art.
One of my favorite bands of the '70s was Alice Cooper, in fact I still
listen to the albums "Love It To Death" and "Killer" on occasion. After the
success of "School's Out" and "Billion Dollar Babies," Alice lost his
original band and with them a lot of important creative input. Being an
entertainer became way more important than making good music, so Alice hung
out with Liza Minnelli and golfed with Bob Hope and "went Hollywood." YAWN!
I do think things got interesting for a while in the nineties when
Nirvana broke the spell of spandex, big hair, and lipstick, but now things
have settled back down into layers of homogenized fluff. There's lots of
great music out there, just don't expect to hear much of it on the radio.

Listen to each side. As I recall, the lead vocal sounds like it's in the
center or there about. When you pan it's on one side. It's dry and there
are some ambient reverberated lead VOX tails on some passages on the other
side. There are some other panning and wet dry things going on in the mix.
When you pan around and listen, it's kind of a weird mix. When you pan
center it all comes together. I just wonder what would happen and what you
would hear if you played with the phase. It's a different approach to mixing.
Sometimes it's good to listen to some mixes on one side at a time. And yeah,
the drums are great.no problems at all, I lean back in my chair and it's straight ahead that way.
I have the 19" monitor and that 32" display used in various scenarios.
I mix to picture often, so sometimes I'll use that as the playback monitor
while other times I'll use it when I'm editing or just mixing. When I'm in
the process of EQing and setting up a mix or tracking, I'll have everything
on the smaller monitor and then it turns into a display of the other room.
I'm actually going to be converting my garage into the full studio at some
point now the fiance and kids are moved in.

drastic changes---I had (3) Liquid Channels and was about to buy (2) more,
but decided to go another direction. There's a new product coming I'm not
allowed to talk about yet, but I'm buying it when it's out. It's going to
be one of the most revolutionary pres you'll see to date.
But yeah, those ADL's get HOT! Actually, all of my pres are either Tube
or Transformer-based. I have a separate room air conditioner with volume
control-ahhhhhhhhhhh. On the table to the right is an SSL channel strip,
to my surprise--it doesn't get that hot. Go figure!

through a scare of my own. I had major health problems with my breathing
for three years, well it took that long to figure out the problem. I was
choking, I had muscle hanging into my throat and making me pass out. I almost
died actually because I was suffocating. So they had to put me in for major
re-constructive throat surgery, I was home for about 6-weeks on bed rest
taking 1,000mg of hydrocodeine around the clock every 2-hours for 10-days!

>JohnThe best Steve Miller album, IMO, was his LP called Sailor when Boz skaggs
was a member of the band. I think my favorite Steve Miller song is Dime A
Dance Romance and that was written by Boz Skaggs. The words are pretty
unintelligible, but there is enough nuance in them to paint an alluring
mental image of a debauch in a waterfront bar....sort of a Louie Louie
kinda' thing. There were also a couple of rockers on some other albums of
that era..one song called Steppin Stone and another that I can't remember.
Fly like an Eagle???.....the only great thing about that album, IMO, was
that it was recorded in his garage on a TEAC 80-80 (or so the legend goes).
The Joker was a joke..........bleecccchhh!!!!!
As far as cracker bands are concerned, I never thougth that of
Boston.....but then again, I really never gave it any thought. I was so
friggin glad to be hearing anything but disco that it worked for me at the
time. I was a big Little Feat fan back then.
I'm gonna go down to a bar here in Durango called Scootin' blues tonight.
The town is full of a bunch of middle aged white guys and gals (damn!!!..I
just can't quit sayin' "gals", can I?) who are dressed in leathers and are
pretending to be real bikers. It's sooooo funny to watch them try to look
cool and hip and strut their stuff. Maybe the band will cover some Boston
tunes. Nothin funnier than watching old white people dance.

Yes. Very sad.

At least you found the problem.......but ya know, some people actually get
their kicks that way....;o)....I'm doing the "you gotta' lower your
cholesterol" thing right now. No more breakfast tacos for a while. Oatmeal

Like so much of radio they only play the lighter side. There is some solid
writing and playing once you get past "more than a feeling". Funny, cuz
I met Scholz and he is definitely Thad's kind of guy. Highly educated,
(M.A. M.I.T.) very intellectual with a great passion for music technology.
About as much of a cracker as SSC was...
DCI always liked the way Delf's voice morphed into guitar feedback at the
beginning of the lead solo in More than A Feeling.

>Ok, I'll check it out but I have a theory on mentally what's happening
with verb on one channel and none on the other. My theory is that if
you have verb on both your ear hears a room, not your room but another
room.
My thought is that if you have the verb in predominantly one side (verb
channel left has 30% in right also for glue, and right has 30% left)
that your ear hears the dry and the verb and tricks your brain into
thinking the verb is YOUR room making the instrument seem closer to
actually being there.
It's the coolest effect I've heard yet !!

Get your doc to give you a scrip for this stuff called Niaspan.
All it is is a time-release form of niacin (vitamin B3), but
you can't get it OTC... it's not too expensive, and it'll help
more than any diet, and in terms of possible side-effects it's
WAY better than going on Lipitor, or any of those other things,
assuming it works in your case (it only takes a month to find
out, do it for four weeks, then get your cholesterol checked
again & see if it's working for you - obviously not everything
works for everyone in the same way).
My doctor uses it himself, and he's got me on it now... my
cholesterol had headed towards 220, and after 4 weeks of
nothing but oatmeal breakfasts & no fat, no red meat, no eggs,
etc, etc, I went back in to have it checked & it had gone up to
250; and in fact, my good cholesterol had gone down! Doc says
he had the same thing happening to him, and despite diet,
excercise, etc, his #'s were way over 300... went on Niaspam &
all's well. He's a young guy, too - in his 30's, I'd guess, not
overweight, doesn't smoke, etc... it's just a genetic thing for
a lot of people.

>Good luck Nappy!
GrahamI recently upgraded to C4 from SX1. I've been using Samplitude up 'til
now, but got kind of fed up with certain Sam limitations.
I am so impressed with C4 and it's capabilities. I love patching in
outboard f/x with delay compensation. I actually dig many of the
included f/x plugs and the Studio eq is not too shabby. I was just
messing with the envelope shaper on a snare and could get a ton of
control with it (trick I just found: when snare fills need more oomph,
automate the release time and open it up for the fill - makes them big
and ballsy).
One of the reasons I switched away from Sam is it has a kind of
incomplete or sloppy aspect to it. They add new features but don't
complete or integrate them fully. C4 is totally the opposite - a very
slick, pro bit o' kit.
I'm contemplating something DJ will no doubt appreciate. There are some
excellent f/x in Sam I would like to be able to patch into from C4, but
they are proprietary. Can I run Sam on a separate machine and patch via
the sends out thru ADAT LP into a channel in Sam with the f/x on it? I
wonder if it senses the actual delay or just computes it from the driver
latency settings? If it just computes it will not compensate for the
delay into and out of the Sam machine's sound card. When I get time to
install sam on the other machine I'll check it out.
If you are looking for a really excellent, mature and robust DAW I do
recommend C4.Nappy,
I'm excited for you to finally be able to do this. My prayers are with you...

I was more stable than ever before with Lucid WC,
2 MECs and one 442. Never crashed once. I added
a third MEC and that was okay but it's in/outs weren't
functional. I tried it in a different position and ever since
then I get this after Paris has gotten to the EDS/DX effects
part of the start up.
Unhandled Exception:c00000005
at address: 77c35ea
I tried removing the last MEC and putting it in the last working =
position.
All I get is this error and can't boot up Paris.
Last working configuration:
Submix A MEC
Submix B 442
Submix C MEC (no working audio)
Submix E MEC
I tried swapping hardware between Submix B and C and that's when the =
trouble began.
I also reseated the eds cards and their cables.
Is it possible it's an effect? I have added nothing new in months and =
it was very stable.
Maybe a defective default project?
I'll try another one to boot from that happens to be at 48k.
Tips graciously accepted,
Tom

------=_NextPart_000_00C9_01C7BE38.A2B78290--One of the best concerts I ever saw in my life was ZZ top in 1971 in the
football stadium at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches Texas. I was
flabbergasted. The only other time I had seen guitar playing like that had
been at a Hendrix concert back in the late summer of 1970, right before he
died.
Billy Gibbons can really play some incredible stuff. I really don't like
stylistic direction he and the band eventually took. By 1974, they weren't
innovative any more.it was all this "formula/Texas Hype" and it got got
really old and stupid. I was at their Barndance and Bar B Q concert in
Memorial Stadium in Austin in the summer of '74. 80,000 people sitting on
concrete bleachers and astroturf stoned and drunk out of their minds in the
middle of July with very limited water supplies and bags of Reddi Ice being
sold by the promoters for $10.00+ per. When the sun went down, people were
so crazed from the drugs and the heat that they started lighting fires on
the Astroturf. UT didn't allow another concert in that stadium for 25 years.
Bad Company (with Jimmy Paige sitting in) opened the concert, followed by
Santana. ZZ top showed up after that and they were just "loud" and mediocre
by comparison, eaaring these white Gene Autry costumes with oversized 20
gallon hats. I thought I was hallucinating......well....more than usual.
Santana, OTOH, just stole the show stole the show. I went out and bought
Borboletta the next day.
OK......rant off..

Tom,
After you have edited your Pairs .cfg file to add the line =
"UseHouseSync=3D1" (no quotes), save this and reboot your computer.
1. Get the 442 completely out of the equation. Forget about using it =
ever again in a multicard setup. It's just going to make your life =
miserable.
2. Connect the three MECs to the Lucid clock outputs with cables of =
equal length, connect the MEC on card A to clock output #1, Mec on card =
B to output #2, etc.........I don't know why, but this is what worked =
for me.......then ((very important) set the Lucid clock to 44.1KHz =
sample rate (if that's what you're using)
3. Boot Paris from the Paris.exe in the C\Program files\EMU\Paris folder
4. Set the project to 48KHz and save it back to the same folder under =
the name "Default Project" (no quotes).
5. Save it again to the desktop under the same name.
6. Reboot your computer and launch Paris from the icon on your desktop. =
Do not ever change the sample rate of your Default Project. Leave it at =
48KHz. You will be able to open all of your old 44.1 projects or create =
new 44.1 projects from this one once Paris has booted and fully =
initialized.
