Some good suggestions already (especially the SSL one, IMO),
but in that price range you can't leave out the Manley
Vari-Mu... $3,600 at Mercenary. It CAN get colored if you want
it to be, but it's pretty damn clean.

NeilCongrats!!! Post a pic of your studio once you get it setup...

I have some files I can send .
These are 24bit Wav files recorded by Roger Nichols.
Thanks,

I know the 163 and the 166 share the same VCA (except as noted) and these
both have different envelopes-of-attack from the 161. This has a lot to do
with the overall sound.
I should point out that the person who told me about some of the early 166
boxes was not from DBX, but was a technician that I trusted and he should
have known. I could be wrong about this.
You should be in a good position to listen to the two units side by side.
This is really the best way anyway, particularly since many of the older
units are way overdue for a rebuild/recalibration.
Looking inside is not always helpful. The early VCAs are not always labeled.
The attached image looks generally like most of the early VCAs.
