Hey D,
Ya but I'll have a UAD (or 2?) and a Creamware Pro
along with Cubase in the same box hopefully.

Hi,
I have a P4B asus motherboard running 5 eds cards.
So running 5 cards it is a no brainer with my config.
I would love to try the sixth slot on that MB but have not a working =
effect
addon card for my sixth EDS500 card to try this out.
If that would succeed (why not) then you can have 6 eds cards on a P4B =
motherboard
that can have up to 2.8 GHZ with 3gb PC133 memory.

Regards,
Dimitrios

DimitriosHi Dimitrios.

These were the brainchild of Bill Mauchly, who I understand was also
involved in PARIS (I believe he wrote the PARIS mixer code). I have Bill's
current email address; inviting him to come over to the Wiki to add
to/correct his entry and maybe doing an interview with him on the blog are
amongst the items on my (unfortunately rather long) to-do list.

Asking him about where WAVEBOY is at nowadays is *definitely* on my list.

PARIS was fairly well along in development years ago; I don't know what
stage it got to. It disappeared in the chaos in the post-discontinuation
phase of PARIS along with a couple of other interesting efforts.

I'm guessing the business side was the complication rather than anything
technical, but a lot of business assumptions that were valid in 2003 have
been superseded by new realities by 2008. Definitely worth renewing contact
and pursuing.

Assuming we conquered the first hurdle, which is strongly looking like the

Re: PCI expansion?yup... that's what I'd have done. I would probably in =
younger days when I had more time gone beyond that and built my own =
power supplies and skipped the whole ATX thing. Bypassing the crappy =

the chassis, BUT you will definitely want some kind of protection =

How to get the VirtuaVia box working with multiple UAD cards

How to get the VirtuaVia box working with multiple UAD cards
by mkstat on Mon May 12, 2008 12:03 pm

A few months ago I bought a Virtua Via PCIe to PCI expansion chassis =
for my new MacPro 8x3GHz to run my PCI UAD cards.
The reason why the VV box doesn=C2=B4t work properly with more than =
one UAD cards is because of a weak powersupply. The included external =
PSU delivers 12V/3A and unfortunately the maximum rating of the internal =
(on the card) 5V step-down switching regulator (2596) is also limited to =
3A. So using a higher power rating 12V PSU is pointless. The UAD manual =
says: =E2=80=9EEach UAD card uses a maximum of 14 watts of 5 volt power =
from the PCI bus=E2=80=9C =E2=80=93 in other words each card draws 2.8A =
at 5V from the PSU. So there is no chance for safe operation of more =
than one card plugged in the chassis. I actually had problems with just =
one card at higher cpu loads (80%+) in form of dropouts.

BUT:
After disabling the on-card 5V step-down switching regulator and =
connecting a 400W ATX computer powersupply directly to the PCB in the VV =
box a setup with 3 UAD cards (each with 95% CPU load) worked flawlessly! =
=20

The modification is quite easy and safe to do for people with some =
experience in electronics and PCB soldering skills.

For those who are interested I will post a step by step guide with =
some pics for this modification during next week.

If it worked with an EDS - wouldn't this be the ticket to adapt an EDS =
card to a modern, post-PCI 2.3 motherboard without an expansion chassis =

Check this thread out here - it starts getting really interesting at =
post #27. What's the physical size of a UAD vs. an EDS?

If this works - the game just suddenly got a lot more interesting.

A few months ago I bought a Virtua Via PCIe to PCI &nbsp;expansion chassis =
for my new MacPro 8x3GHz to run my PCI UAD cards.<BR>
The &nbsp;reason why the VV box doesn&acute;t work properly with more than =
one UAD cards is &nbsp;because of a weak powersupply. The included external =
PSU delivers 12V/3A and &nbsp;unfortunately the maximum rating of the intern=
al (on the card) 5V step-down &nbsp;switching regulator (2596) is also limit=
ed to 3A. So using a higher power &nbsp;rating 12V PSU is pointless. The UAD=
manual says: &#8222;Each UAD card uses a &nbsp;maximum of 14 watts of 5 vol=
t power from the PCI bus&#8220; &#8211; in other words each &nbsp;card draws=
2.8A at 5V from the PSU. So there is no chance for safe operation &nbsp;of =
more than one card plugged in the chassis. I actually had problems with &nbs=
p;just one card at higher cpu loads (80%+) in form of &nbsp;dropouts.<BR>
<BR>
BUT:<BR>
After disabling the on-card 5V step-down switching &nbsp;regulator and conn=
ecting a 400W ATX computer powersupply directly to the PCB &nbsp;in the VV b=
ox a setup with 3 UAD cards (each with 95% CPU load) worked &nbsp;flawlessly=
! &nbsp;<BR>
<BR>
The modification is quite easy and safe to do for &nbsp;people with some ex=
perience in electronics and PCB soldering &nbsp;skills.<BR>
<BR>
For those who are interested I will post a step by step guide &nbsp;with so=
me pics for this modification during next &nbsp;week.<BR>

--B_3295528053_1789915--But with UP as OFF it might be too easy to accidentally push it in and
turn the circuit on when the guitar is in the case or gig bag. So now
I'm leaning toward a separate power switch on my sustainer guitar...

Still usind a pair of old dual output NVS280 Quadro's.
They are only 64mb, but are perfectly adequate for anything
but modern gaming.
Others here are using newer cards with no problem, but I
don't recall the model numbers.

We're putting some of the final tracking touches on the new Monkie CD so
we're down to the very end of the punch list. One of the songs we have is
called 'Hobo Rocket' and it might just be the signature tune of the CD. It's
about a bunch of hobos who build a rocket,

Shining hobo rocket
Dance across the sky
Heading for Uranus
Heard it's made of pecan pie

and we wanted to get a 'rocket taking off' sound without using a sample.
So, about half an hour of scraping my Les Paul on the side of my Savage amp
and a super resonant low pass filter and we're done with it.

Now THAT is what I find fun about recording.

TCBHi Kerry,

I'm not sure about where the info about bill re evolimit and guis and mike
arnao came from, but it's not really accurate. Neither is the stuff about
the waveboy plugins. It's not that big a deal, but Bill might get peeved
at me as there were a whole raft of plugins that I was supposed to finish,
start selling commercially and give him a cut.

Or just get right up on the mic and go "whooooeeeaaaaah" while screaming....

Anyway, sounds like a very cool day in the studio, Thad!

If you're running WinVista on anything, under NO circumstances
should you install (or allow it to be installed, via automatic
update) Vista Service Pack 1, just released this morning.

I'm typing this from my laptop, which now works properly, as it
did before installing Vista SP1... had to run System Restore to
get it there, since hardly anything worked after SP1 installed,
but you get the drift.

Peace-out, happy recording.

NeilSame goes for XP SP3...

since I for the most using WinXP, where I also have installed SP3 on 5
partitions on 2 machines here, after tested it on one partition. The only
problem I can see is with Wavelab Essentials/Adobe Audition, last versions,
where I cannot burn audio CD's. Going to another partion and using Nero,
there's no problems burning the same songs.

System Restore then installed XP SP3, All seems to be fine here on it. I
haven't noted any jump in CPU usage or anything funny that's obvious.

I have fired up several audio and video apps, done print jobs.. nothing
broken as of yet and it actually fixed a strange power saving issue I had
where the second monitor wouldn't wake up w/o a reboot. So far, so good.
Unfortunately, it didn't fix the sync lock problem on monitor 2, and I'm
probably going to have to replace the crappy onboard video with a real PCIe
card video out.
It is 'not' my Paris machine however. There is absolutely nothing about XP
SP2 or SP3 that Paris needs. I don't 'net on Paris. Anyone using their
Paris machine to surf is asking for it and no amount of SPx is gonna save
from the inevitable bad luck.

This is by no means a resounding Microsoft is Great! Microsoft is Perfect!
Install it! It just so happens that it's worked out here on this particular
box well for me. I wouldn't, historically viewing, say that installing it to
an older machine would be a good idea. MS has had a history of that kind of
thing working, but never quite right IME.

I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction for troubleshooting
an installation problem. I've recently put a new 8-in an 8-out card into
my MEC, and when I run Paris, they don't show up on the patch bay and I can't
seem to use them. I'm wondering if there are steps that I am missing here.
I've looked in the manual and can't find any notes on installing these things
into an existing MEC. So I'm a little bit lost. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Davidjeeez dont loose that stuff, its so valuable! :-)

the asr-x/fizmo effects are the same basically. the vocoder
is pretty lame, but the rest is top notch almost from start
to finish.

Wanted to say that RTF Friday night in Portland was the most amazing show
I've seen. I loved their music way back when but to see it performed with
the maturity Chick, Lenny, Al, and Stanley now possess, it was absolutely
phenomenal. One of the very best sounding shows as well. Great job by the
sound guys.

I highly recommend this experience. GO!

What version of Paris and what OS? How many EDS cards? If more than
one, what is connected to each?

Just need more info to help with troubleshooting.

Hey Mark,
I'd love to see that show too! They must have been great.
Were they electric all night or did they do some acoustic too?

David,
In theory they should just show up in the modules section in
the patchbay. Does the Mec master module show up that these
new 8 in/outs are installed in?

More info will help.
