Way back when he used to call me once a month or so (who would have thought),
in the first days of the NG...
We were talking about oberheim stuff, and I was recalling how much I liked
this oberheim drum machine I used to use 'back in the 80s' because it was
so easy to program, had decent sounds for electronic music and 8 outs. He
said, yeah it's a DMX, I have one if you want it. I never took him up on
it. Lo and behold there it is on the equipment list.

Since I feel like satuation/clipping has more to do with bigger mixes (obviously
a big selling point in paris with its ability to crank levels) this is one
area I've been concentrating on more than summing issues.
There is a modular synth addon for SCOPE called Adern Flexor. Included in
it is about 5-6 saturation modules:
http://adern.com/manuals/flexor/reference/shapers/saturation /soft_sat.htm
My idea is to strap these across multiple channels in SCOPE while streaming
my mix from a native app through them.
I'll be doing some tests and let you guys know how they come out.

I loved that box too.
Little known fact:
The DMX (and DX) had each sound burned to a PROM chip and after it was out
for a few months a small company started that offered alternate samples available
on chips the user could swap (I think they also offer Linndrum chips). I
picked up some of the chips offered. The company went on to become Digidesign.
The DMX came with a killer snare sample.

Here's another device that could be used for the same result:

Speaking of EPROM drum sample chips, ever use the Wendel Jr.?
Those worked pretty well, actually!
Neilor tied doing another mix down and see if that dupes it?
try doing a strip header thing?

Import the individual .paf's into a stereo file in WL (go to
File>Open>Wave>file type>Ensoniq PAF then shift+right click on each one and
then click on open?
At this point, the L & R mono files whould open as a stereo PAF in Wavelab.
Then did you process/dither the files using the render function and save
them as a separate file? did they play back OK? Then did you set a directory
path to save this as a 16bit/44.1kHz .wav file? Did it still play back OK?
Next, did you go to File>Save Special (wave)>Encode MP3>Save as Type>MPEG-1
Layer3 (MP3) and below this there should be an active bar that should say :
MP3/Stereo/44.100Hz/LameEric-128Kbs/Attr
Then you name the file and directory pach and hit OK. this works for me
every time.
I'll be out for a few hours. I'll check back in later on. If you're still
having trouble PM me a animix-at-animas-dot-net and I'll try to help you get
this going.

> JesseThe Adern stuff is an add-on to the modular synth. Probably not worth it for
you, since I don't hear a lot of modular synths in bluegrass tunes ;-) Anyway,
from what I've heard of your mixes you're looking, if anything, for greater
clarity not better fuzziness.
I've spent most of the past three days spending my free time with this stuff.
It's far more intuitive working in non-XTC mode than I thought (esp with
the nView stuff so I can have one screen for Scope, one for Live, and one
for other stuff), and I haven't even read the manuals yet, though I'm about
to start. And the Bowen synths, omigod omigod omigod, I'm really mad at myself
I didn't do this sooner.
Are you using the 'fancier' mixers with the f/x and EQs and such? Or are
you still working mostly with this stuff as a better RME card?

to add to my 3 card system. Typically, I keep one as a back up, but I wanted
to know if there were any problems adding a fourth and possibly the fifth
to my 8 channel Avid extender.
I spoke with Gene and recall him mentioning that there might be a problem
going beyond 3 cards (Gene, was that within the PC?).
Before purchasing the extender, my Win98 PC worked with the 3 cards installed
and I put in the fourth to test and it worked, though I only tested it for
a short period.
I recall reading posts of larger systems, but can't recall the details.
Thanks,
TyroneI've got 4 in a magma with no issues on WinXP. I seem to remember
someone having some issue with the avid box/drivers though.

Yup, this NG was a really odd (in a good way) place a long, long time ago.
You're talking about even before I was involved, but I think I got a taste.
I post a question, lil' ol' me, and get an answer from SSC and/or Edmund,
and then Jason Miles tells what and idiot I am and how many Grammy winning
records he's worked on. Lotta fun, them days.

That's the standard method for rendering and dithering in Wavelab, if you're
a total control freak and want to make sure you don't end up saving your

I'd prolly hurry it up. I'm not too sure I'd feel very good about having you
squirming around behind me squeezin' your lizard in a bathroom.
;o)
;o)Well, I tried 192 instead of the usual 128 and got the same debris. Didn't
try any other rates.

creating optimized audio file headers on wave files? I think it's a form for
exstra non audio informations. But Paris hate to import wave files with
these kind of things, so there is a little program that can strip this
header things. You can do this thing inside Wavelab too, I think it's in the
Option/Preferences/File folder.
Good luck

DJ,
The adern modules are a 3rd party add on for the SCOPE modular system. so
they wont be there in a synth pack.
http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21138&high light=ecc83
http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21014&high light=ecc83
Those two are free though. I've already experimented with the ECC83 and
its nice for smoothing out transients on a mix.
JesseHi if you have senn my posts for ecc83 I have noted that used subtly can make
a great smoothing tube /tape effect.
I asked for a special versuion with no knobs just this subtle effect that
tubes introduce when driven moderately and he will be making this so stay
tuned !
In the meanwhile try the free ecc83 with my suggested setting at pulsar forum.

Dimitros yes I saw your post, need to read it again.
I am having some trouble just getting unit gain from this. I send it signal
with no tube knobs up and the level is reduced. It seems about 8-10db of
output gain is needed to adjust this.
It also seems like processing is applied even with the knobs all the way
down.
that being said I like what I hear so far, subtly increasing the drive and
the transients get softly rounded yet not muffled.

Sarah,
And the problem is?
It's an mp3. Sounds okay unless the hat was
supposed to be more straight than it sounded on 3+.
Try burning a disc and listen on another system to see
if it still sucks. =20
It sounded okay here. Nifty actually!

I combined some users tips here...
You use aux 1 as a stereo feed to eds stereo compressor.
You use the aux as pre and mute every drumtrack.
Now using the aux pan pot you send the drumtracks to the stereo field as
needed.
You open a eds compressor with 1.20 ratio 8 (yes only 8) release attack about
12 o'clock predelay 3 (if you want you can nudge all drumtracks 3 ms to the
left) threshold -96 and output like 4-5 db.
Now these will be the compressed only drums.
Now on aux 2 stereo again pre again yiou use the same aux settings and you
put on aux 2 same eds compressor with same predelay BUT with no threshold
and no ratio as to have the dry only signal.
Thus with aux1 you control the compressed drummix only and with aux2 the
dry drums.
Happy new Year.
DimitriosDid you try compressing a mix with no hihats? And did the wierd little
glitches go away?
Looking forward to your next CD.
Cheers,
-Jamie

All for under $200. I was very tempted to get one.
I was like the ...the Beta52A was $170 by itself...Hmmm... I could get the
entire kit dor that much...,but they were lower grade mics and I wanted good
quality so I passed.
If I had another $200 to spend I would have got one of them.
Anyway Strait Music at 620 and 183...if you guys want to give 'em a call.

Thanks alot in advance..
p.s : I am using aABIT AV8 3Rd eye MOBO with an Athlon AMD +3500 64
bit Processor with 4 EDS-1000 cards ( working on SBS Chassis expansion )
and MEC ( Black )Ok... I have been over thinking rock n' roll lately.
What I am thinking is....
If it takes roughly 28 feet for a 40hz wave form to develop
does that mean that that is the optimal distance for micing that frequency?
I figure only about 440hz and higher develop fully within 4 feet of the kick
drum.
So if i remember correctly a 60hz frequency will go thru one cylce at approximately
20-30ms into the kick sound.
So I was wondering if shifting the lower frequencies back towards the beginning
of kick beat by approximately 20-30ms if that would give a more powerful
kick sound/tone.
Make sense?
Anyway I will be trying it.
Wonder if the same will help bass guitar or any instrument.
Perhaps I ned to just go to sleep.
B http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?oid=911d85ea5c7e3032&r url=video.yahoo.com&fr=yvmtfDon't forget to think about proximity effect in this equation. I do
encourage you to do experiments, keep going man. What you'll learn about
your mics, instruments and rooms will stay with you long after any recording
medium. Acoustic knowledge never goes out of style.

I would like to post the alternative to bus compressing using Paris =
eds compressor.
I combined some users tips here...
You use aux 1 as a stereo feed to eds stereo compressor.
You use the aux as pre and mute every drumtrack.
Now using the aux pan pot you send the drumtracks to the stereo field =
as
needed.
You open a eds compressor with 1.20 ratio 8 (yes only 8) release =
attack about
12 o'clock predelay 3 (if you want you can nudge all drumtracks 3 ms =
to the
left) threshold -96 and output like 4-5 db.
Now these will be the compressed only drums.
Now on aux 2 stereo again pre again yiou use the same aux settings and =
you
put on aux 2 same eds compressor with same predelay BUT with no =
threshold
and no ratio as to have the dry only signal.
Thus with aux1 you control the compressed drummix only and with aux2 =
the
dry drums.
Happy new Year.
Dimitrios

------=_NextPart_000_0014_01C7328C.299F3B60--I'll have to do some more experimenting, but I needed to get this to the
band so they can start practicing, so I finally got a good mp3 by using the
"variable rate" and "highest quality" settings. It's a bit larger file, but
it sounds good. If you want to hear the whole demo, it's at
http://www.sarahtonin.com/playlist/Survival%20demo.m3u The section after the
second chorus will have some kind of solo, not sure what yet . . . violin?
slide guitar? gritty blues harmonica? kazoo? I don't know . . .
Thanks

If you put the C-16 in submix mode channels 1 thru 8 will control submix
1-8 and the master fader will control the Global master. When C-16 is in
normal mode the master fader controls whichever submix the C-16 is assigned

channel sellect buttons on the C-16. You only have to clickk on the master

Sorry Rod, i'm sure I understand.Thanks, Rod.
You've saved me a fortune in Blu-Tak!
Now I'm gonna print out your instructions and stick 'em next
to my desk. (with blu-tak, of course!).
Cheers.

>>Thanks Rick! I'm sorry to hear about your friend. My brother passed away
in 1997 the same day Princess Diana died. Skydiving may have been a factor
in his death, but it wasn't the cause of death. It's a long sad story, maybe
some day I'll post about it or throw up a web page. The following year a
bunch of his friends joined him when their King Air went down.

Sorry to take so long replying to this - I forgot which thread it was in!
I don't use bananas myself, but for 3.5mm, check out:
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category/117/Cables_-_ 3.5mm_Plugs.html
The CB-352 cables are good - 2' for .90 each, quantity 10-99...
Doug
http://www.parisfaqs.comSeems a little glitchy, and uses quite a bit of cpu, but
it does sound quite good. Worth checking out and watching.

This plugin is based on a different convolution technology called dynamic
volterra kerneling. This form of dynamic convolution appears to not violate
the current Sintefex patents used by Focusrite and Sintefex, but it offers
the same kind of time variant realism.
The free plug includes very good sounding reverbs a very good compressor
and an excellent phaser among others. It appears to be just scratching what
this technology can do.
It is very CPU intensive.

>I am cobnvinced now that the best workuing method for triggering drums and
making a great drum production is at least also the following:
I bought me Digisound drumtriggers for 15 euros 8 pieces.
I attached them on sanre tom kick using doublesided adhesive tape and put
their output DIRECTLY to a SEPARATE Paris input module along with normal
recorded drums.
No preamp needed !!!
Just hook it unbalanced to Paris in and you get a healthy recorded sound
that sounds AWFUL but healthy enouph to drive DRUMAGOG, yes that beauty plugin.
Amazing results no false triggering because you actually use the sound and
not some fance trigger to midi to sound thing...
Just tailor drumagog to trigger the right way.
By the way their snare is fabulous.
These triggers are touch sensituive so you record the actual drumming with
volume variations.
The drumagog snae is multisampled (many many samples there) from very low
hits to very loud.
Vwery very convincing...
So you record different tracks , kick snare toms and yiou put drumagog on
every one with appropriatte samples.
Use your drum overhead for some room ambience or you cam use some good reverb
for creating that.
You can also attach them to cymbals !!.
I am sure it will work just fine.
The hihat is a problem though so kepp this live ! :)
You can kepp all your cymbals live by the way ...
Perfect world we live in right?
ow I will not care if I will record that perfect snare that will not contain
that hihat again in it...
Regards,
DimitriosI just finished attempting to go back to v.3.8 from v.3.9. I can't make it
work. I uninstalled all the UAD-1 3.9 stuff and re-installed 3.8 and I get
a message saying that there is a software mismatch and the plugins won't
work. I spoke w/ Casey at Universal Audio, who was very nice and tried to
be helpful, but in the end he couldn't figure it out either.
Have any Mac people gone from 3.9 back to 3.8?

(859) 635-5762Hi Gantt ,
I went from 3.9 back to 3.7 because it seems to
work more reliably. There is a UAD folder on
your boot drive, in the PARIS VST Folder and in system
folder-application support area.
hope that helps,
regards,
Mike

Chuck should chime in here shortly, but it was part of the XP upgrade
intallation package as part of the Studio Controll Library DLL if I remember
correctly. So it should be there if you're rumming 3.0 on XP
As for operation...pop it in an Aux as a wires out and in an EDS insert as a
wires in...I have on occassion had problems sending a reverb across or
losing the link but a reinstantiation of the plug in both the AUx and EDS
insert seemed to sure that problem
DonHaving the drums in the overheads is usually crucial to my sounds... ymmv...

PS In addition to the folders previously mentioned
I forgot the preference folder and
extension folder. In 9.2 all of that stuff needs to be
ripped out manually and trashed before you do a
clean install.

The new Apple TV and iPhone are featured.
http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/j47d52oo/event/I remember, in Nashville, back in the late 80's, that was a pretty big thing.
Seperate lines from peizo's just to trigger gates. pretty much zero crosstalk.

Dimitrios it's simple it's silly. The only problem is we can't automate
using this type of routing. Sometimes that's necessary.
