There are two interesting models:
PAPST 80mm, 12dB, N/2GLE
PAPST 80mm, 19dB, N/2GMLE
All are top quality, excelent airflow and quiet.
Note that lower noise means slower spin speed...
....so I think 12db (decibel) model which rotates
at cca1500rpm is ok for most MECs.
But, if your MEC is crowded with expansion cards (4 or more)
, go for 19db model (cca2000rpm)
They are not cheap, but they are good.
Also note that a little soldering must be made
to move connector from old fan to new...
Papst has 3 wires:
Blue (-) minus
Red (+) 12v plus
White (rotation) - N/C on paris psu.
Cheers.

Hey, both views are right. Most people will never hear the things
that bug you, but yes, you need to fix them.
Why?
Because those who open the door to future jobs *will* hear them,
and those who have good systems and good ears will hear them
and they often carry more than their share of influence.
Most of all, this is your life, your resume, and you want it to
stand up to the test of time.
Not to put pressure on you, but I am glad you will have the time
to work a little more closely on the things that bug you.
It is a very good sign when you like something better in the
morning than you did they night before!
I am still replacing tracks and editing on the live 24-trk session.
It's going well, and I have a bunch of preliminary EQ's and FX
settings sounding pretty good.
Everyone loves the drum sound...
4 MICS!! Kick, snare, and stereo pair overhead. amazing...
heh heh had to bust your hump a little...
best,
DCOn this project, I've got NoLimit set to .09 threshold and 0.2dB limiting.
The Cubase channel faders are driving the Paris channels.
The Paris channel faders are driving the Paris submix aggressively or
mildly, depending on the song and the submix fader levels are driving the
the mix bus.

>Actually Mutt DOES seem to remain objective. He seems to just get what
a good song is and keeps working on the craft to achieve his well
understood goals. The thing is, if you KNOW exactly what your goal is
then if it takes 100 times more than average to achieve it you can STILL
achieve it as long as you are clear on what the goal is. I have studied
Mutt seriously for YEARS and his craft appears to be very refined but
very describable.
I find his albums some of the most enjoyable of any I own starting with
Woman in Me and Come on Over. I consider UP much less interesting but
his talent is all over them. Also Foreigner 4, the AC/DC stuff and
Bryan Adams albums show that his skill is not a fluke but a mature
craft. He is quoted as saying he doesn't care about audiophile quality,
he cares what will SELL and that is all. He is writing his songs for
the checkout girl at the walmart. With Shania they are worth over 1/2
billion bucks so I think they are doing something right.

Wow! Definitely my longest post.
You may have other hardware, such as a Wacom tablet, that requires some of
these to be enabled. If so, you should get an error message at startup that
will indicate what's needed.
This will leave you with a pretty well stripped down system. I recommend
creating an extension set named Audio Recording or PARIS or something that
makes sense. I have a set for everyday stuff with networking and another
for PARIS.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.
Have a great weekend!

number of non-native plugins you're running.

The only think I can think of is to have a version of 2.2 installed on a
separate boot partition (does 2.2 work on XP?) just for this purpose.

this. I was up until 6AM, slept until 10:00, woke up and worked on it until
2:00 PM. The client took it out of here at 2:30 for duplication and I took a
nap.
Since this is a short run fo the party, there are still some things I will
change before the large run is done, but that's going to be in a couple of
weeks, so I can relax and take my time. The client was checking it out at
this other studio in a professionally built mix room (designed by Ed
Stasium) with a very expensive reference system and he is tickled to death
with the whole thing. This mkes me feel very good that I can trust my room..
The CD release party is tonight. I'm expected to attend. I'm pretty much a
hermit these days. It's been dry here all winter but it finally decided to
show up 3 days ago and there is over a foot of snow on the ground. It's
still snowing hard. That's OK. We need it and it's sort of soothing to the
spirit.....like a big fluffy pillow has descended on the area. The plows are
keeping the main roads clear and my little Passport has 4WD so I guess I'll
run the 7 miles into town and schmooze for a while.

DonNot sure, I've never used the compact files function but the way I handle
unused takes in 3.0 is keep everything till then end of a project and then I
do a "select unused" in the audio window and delete em, then archive
everything onto data DVD.
Of course, this is assuming you have plenty of data drive space.

good idea).
Compact files would still be v useful - e.g. I'm also doing a bunch of solo
acoustic stuff. Since I have to run between rooms to start / stop recording,
it'd be nice to be able to trim the excess as I go through. It'd also help
delete sections when I just leave the tape rolling.
Still, yet more HDs on the way...

PSU's based on the average maximum draw per slot (related to the PCI
spec) and provides a PSU that is sufficient to power the unit at full
capacity. The EDS cards are on the high end of the scale for power
draw. A 7 slot chassis would operate fine with a 300W supply, where as
a 13 slot model should have >400W available.

I would try to find the 13 slot mainly because you can use a wider
choice of power supplys and fans to replace the noisy ones in the unit.
You can even use those new Antec 500 watt fan less ones.
I'm not sure if the 7 slot is fully ATX compatible.

Thanks for allowing me to hang around. Silly me, I just noticed I
misspelled "Y'all". Even though I've been in the south all my life, "y'all"
still seems kind of foreign, 'cause back home in east Tennessee, the word
used more often is "you-ins".

running Paris on Win ME using an ASUS A7V8X-LAN mobo for almost 3 years.
Very stable. The largest CPU this mobo will accommodate is the AMD XP 3200
and it's got a 333MHz system bus as compared to the 400MHz system bus of
more current systems so in that respect, it's a bit of a dinosaur. However,
I have had over 35 VST plugins of varying types installed on a project just
to see what it could survive. My CPU is an XP 2800. It held up well under
this load. IIRC, it was using 60-70% CPU.

If I am just using Paris, by itself, OR running simultaneously
with Cubase, do I need a dual processor??
I am thinking AMD 64, but they do sell those as a dual of course.
Thanks for the advice as always!
ChrisI've been listening to the CD I just mixed in a CD carousel in rotation with
a number of other CD's of the same genre and other genre's from commercial
studios. These are CD's that get radio airplay. I've still got a few more
tweaks to do to get me happy on 3 out of 12 songs but for all practical
purposes, all of these these songs could be played on the radio. That's what
I've been shooting for since I started this little journey. So much of my
learning process over the years has been right here.

>My Ensoniq MR Rack is getting a bit long in the tooth sonically. compared to
my higher REZ VSTi's like Ivory, NI B4II, Halion Player, BFD, GPO, etc. I've
been looking around for a good midi module to supplement these other
instruments which is a little less heavy on the resource hit. I decided that
if I didn't try the new NI Bandstand, I would die. It came in today. I like
it. Very realistic. I've got it happening right now with the Jammer
application using Midiyoke. The sounds are far and above my old synth. I
guess they should be since it's a sample library. It's a keeper and a very
nice addition to the VSTi collection.
Deej...........well........pretty soon you guys can listen to me flounder around
learning how to play a musical instrument again and compose music. I used to
do this, but it's been almost 10 years. Now that I've got somewhat of a
handle on this engineering stuff, I'm getting the urge to compose music/play
instruments again. It may not be too inspiring, but it's bound to be funny.

>A new installment on this old issue - adding a new account seems to have
cleared up the issue with WinXP resetting the desktop prefs - still use the
old account, just added another, and now XP seems happy.
However, I'm wondering if MS .Net Framework 1.1 has anything to do with
losing manual config of general advanced Windows settings (visual effects
checkbox list, advanced file view checkbox list, etc) - I've seen this on
three systems that I loaded Vegas on, which uses .net that I normally
wouldn't install. Any idea how to get access to these? On one system I
know I had access to them, the only change I can associate is Vegas/.Net.
Also, I don't know if it's related, but Acrobat Reader's search window is
just check boxes with no labels - same on a couple of systems (both AR 7.x I
believe). First time I've seen that too.
Maybe I'm just weird and my PCs are playing follow the leader, or MS Windows
is the biggest mess of disorganized code since IBM dumped it's last load of
blown punch cards in a dumpster.
Thanks again for the suggestions,

Not sure if I'd recommend Paris with a dual core. I would suggest a
single core 4000+ a FX57 though. They are very fast chips and with the
right board can be over clocked and be very stable with the right board.

As we all know by now, you can never have enough cowbell!I wonder if I have the plug-in open and hit the side of my monitor if I'll

there's nothing like a great cowbell, recorded in a great-
sounding room, mic'ed with a high-end pre-1960's condenser mic,
run through a vintage Neve mic pre, with a little LA2A on it,
and played by an expert cowbellist.
If you haven't spent $40,000 to build the room, at least $7k on
the mic, and $10k+ on the rest of the signal chain before you
hit the convertors, then you're just wasting you time in trying
to lay down a usable cowbell track.
:)

Midi is evil. Just a bunch of random numbers which were created to do harm
to my brain............and it seems personal.......directed towards me and
no one else. I'd rather be dragged bareassed by a wild horse through a
cactus patch, but alas.......the time has come.
The first thing I need to do is to figure out how to control my old Sony
MU-R201 and V77 FX processors with midi controllers. They have midi I/O
ports. Anyone out there a midi guru? Anyone out there suggest any hardware
midi controllers to do this? Anyone out there willing to have a phone
conversation with me and explain how to program midi?
My Alesis Wedge units (theoretically) function like Lexicon MRC's. It's
possible to patch them into midi channels in Cubase and use them to control
the Wedges. I wonder if the Lexi MRC would control the Sony MU-R201 and V77
units? It sure would be nice to be able to automate these FX units.
Your humble correspondent in the wilds of Colorado.............
;o)None of this will do any good unless the microphone has a deteriorated M7
mylar capsule and a genuine Weber 4bbl carbuerator.

I know how much you hate to read.
How MIDI works by Peter Alexander is one best all around books on the
subject especially hardware MIDI info.
Most of the MIDI control on these old units involves changing presets
and such. Some allow effect changes but I found on some of the old ones
the low MIDI resolution will cause a stepping sound when changing
parameters.

(859) 635-5762Thanks Lance. I've got a line on a Lexicon MRC. This looks like a good
generic controller. I've also got the midi implementation charts for my V77
and MU-R201 and the MRC has 2 x midi I/O and so can likely control both
units.
Once I get my hands on a controller, I'll get my implementation charts
together and get back to you.
Using a hadrware fader controller really appeals to me but actually, from
what you're saying, it sounds like I could just interface these modules
directly to the midi I/O of one of my RME HDSP 9652 interfaces and use
Cubase SX to control them..........correct?
Many thanks,
Deej

vintage Neumann U47, through
the Neve, into the EMI board, onto 1/2" 2-track tape.
The rest of you are all just loser wannabees.
pabThe best resource for impulses that I know of (there are a few smaller sites
too):
http://www.noisevault.com/index.php?option=com_remository&am p;Itemid=29
W2 is $499 - not much less than Altiverb for XP. Waves IR-1 is $800; $400
for IR-L. So I guess Altiverb sits in the middle of those. Then there is
Pristine Space for $139. Some people claim W2 sounds better than SIR and
PS, but I haven't tested it.
Yeah, it isn't me after all. Whew, that was a close one. ;-)

programming for EFX like you're describing... you're better off
automating plugin's, IMO... the flexibility is greater, and the
quality of the sound is better. If you need to automate stuff
in MIDI, you might find you're better off sticking with things
like velocity, modulation, etc.

Haven't used that board so couldn't comment. I have use the ASUS A8R-MVP

in it so far. Of course only 3 PCI slots are on the board but thats the
most you'll get on a current one. The other version of the MVP only have 2.

------=_NextPart_000_000D_01C6488F.37F78790--I see what you're talking about and I guess I could automate the aux sends
and panning in Paris. What I'm really looking to do here is have a way to
easily program and save presets on my rack modules. All send FX in my mix
setup are being done in Paris, not Cubase SX.
For example, let's say I want to create a stage 60' across and position 5
performers within 50' of that 60' width. On my furthest stage left
performer, this leaves 10' of air between the performer and the left side
of the stage and 40' of air between the performer and the opposite wall at
stage right. I pan the performer to the proper position (25' left of stage
center), then set him up on two mono delays, one of which is panned left
the short distance to the closest wall with a 10ms delay, the other being
panned stage right to the farthest wall with a 40ms delay. This get's me a
positional fix L/R. Now also, if I decide I want to further position him
toward the front or rear of the stage, I'll need to use a reverb with a
certain predelay, depending on the depth of the room I have created. This is
a PITA to do on a 19" rack processor with a tiny little LCD. I'm looking
foir a faster way to program what I need and then save it as a tweakable
preset so I've got a group of recallable settings for say, a 80' wide stage
with 6 players spread across 70' of that stage,. a smaller, more intimate
40' wide stage with the players at varying positions. I can see myself
putting together about 5 or 6 different possible soundstaging scenarios. I
want to be able to tweak these quickly and then save them on a *per song*
basis to each project.
I doubt I'll be doing much *real time* changing of the controller values
during mixing, but you never know. I can see needing to crank a send or
sweep a pan pot now and again on certain types of program material.
Regards,
Deej

Does anyone have any hot tips on recording acoustic guitar? I'm particularly
thinking solo acoustic fingerstyle steel string (think Michael Hedges, Justin
King, Pierre Bensusan, etc).
Obvious things are material dependent, but ... tips on any aspect, from mic
positioning, recording levels, good reverbs, etc, would be great. Do people
favour live/dry rooms? I'm (unforunately) using bedrooms etc. I usually try
to keep the room dry, but encourage early reflections with wood boards /
tiles under the player.
A few of my own for starters:
- Tube pres can sound great
- M-S micing
- Unorthodox micing positions (look for the sweet spot)
- In good rooms, mic from a distance. Driving the pres hard makes things
sound big.
- And some more obvious ones: new strings, a great guitar and player
Thanks in advance,
DanI've always favored a combination of an SDC aimed at the
body/neck joint area, coupled with an LDC aimed at roughly the
bridge/soundhole area, but backed off a couple feet or
thereabouts and positioned at a lower height relative to the
floor than the SDC would be. SDC on cardioid, and LDC on omni
often works nice in this configuration. Not something you're
going to pan hard left & right, so if you're going for true
stereo it's certainly not the configuration you'd want to use.

variations on this & save those in the hardware? Then you could
tweak as needed for each particular mix. Seems like doing that,
plus just keeping some notes on the specific settings in a text
file within each project folder would be easier than going
through MIDI parameter automation hell.
IME, MIDI parameter automation is extremely time-consuming, and
not always reliable, to boot.

What processor are you running on the A8R-MVP? I’m looking for a dependable
dual that will live with UAD and Powercore cards.

We make dense, intricate music, though. For traditional acoustic music with
3 or 4 instruments, maybe stereo is better.
But Swen is always recording things in stereo, and I'm always deleting one
of the two....

the instruments best balance locations, consider angles of as much as 30
degrees to the top.

DeejHey Deej
A lot of older hardware units really don't do a very good job dealing with
incoming MIDI. If you really want to do this (I'd try damn hard to do things
with software if possible) then I'd suggest a) learning how MIDI works in
SX and b) getting a generic controller from M-Audio with some knobs and faders
on it. The ability to draw MIDI in SX for testing purposes at least (though
you might find that the tools used for drawing MIDI controller data in SX
are far more useful than you might think) will be a good start.
Lastly, some guy wrote this book about SX that I think you have. There is
an _extensive_ section about MIDI controllers, tools, and editing in that
book precisely because that guy thought it was a very important part of the
application that is chronically underused. In fact, I heat that guy had a
really hard time convincing his editors to go into such depth about the topic
because they, like you, found MIDI unintuitive. But I find legal filings
and calculus unintuitive but others do not, and I probably could get to the
point where I could do both just fine. Just a thought, you might want to
look at that book again.

>You know I like you Deej, but why in heaven's name would you want to buy a
_really_ old hardware unit that was the 'bottom feeder' line from a company
that doesn't make great sounding gear to start with? Really, think about
this. I had to program LXP-5s a long time ago becuase they were the only
reasonably affordable multi-tap delays around and a piece a friend was working
on needed complex multi-taps. I'd guess the modeled reverbs in a POD sound
better than what's in an LXP-5.
I'm assuming this is related to your 'learning MIDI' stuff posted before,
and I will say that the LXP was the first unit I dealt with that really did
do sysex dumps perfectly every time, so I could reset the rental unit to
the exact state I left it in when last I was working. But there _has_ to
be a better way to do things, anyone as ingenious as you getting all of the
native/PARIS stuff to work together can find a better way to do anything
a crappy old Lexi can do.

So anyhow, it began a couple of weeks back when it became apparent that the
rego on my car was due to run out this Saturday. Anyone who has delt with
highly paid managers will no doubt be aware that, as a rule, they are not
particularly competant or efficient. Hence I was quite concerned that the
registration wouldn't get paid.
So I emailed the car manager and advised him that my car, and a couple of
others, were running out of rego this Saturday.
It was last Friday when I chased it up. At this point I was told "I'll call
you back". An hour or two later I received a call telling me that my car
has done too many miles. The lease specifies how many miles are expected,
and I've done too many. Normally this would mean we'd have to update the
lease, however in this case we are on some bizaare credit restrictions with
the leaser holders, hence we are banned from modifying a lease. Hence, another
car, which was planned to go back, would have to be allocated to me, and
my old car would have to be returned.
Fine. The other car was a newer model anyhow. So I cleaned out the old car
for return, and swapped cars.
Today I recieved an email. "Could you please let me know the mileage on your
new car so I can note the time of changeover in the records". Fine. I'll
go and have a look.
So I go down to the car. Car? Car? What car? No car here? What the? DUDE
WHERE'S MY CAR?!?!
The car has gone? Has it been stolen? Loaned out?
Anyhow, turns out one of the managers, who happened to have a set of keys,
simply decided not to tell anybody and just take the car off his own back.
The fact that it belongs to somebody now is irrelivant.
So now it's 11 minutes past home time, and I've got nothing better to do
that write angry posts to the newsgroup.
Hopefully my car will arrive soon.
I'm off to have a beer while I wait.

Cheers,
Kim.Suck. You gotta ride home man?
