wishing you a belated (for you guys in the rest of europe) and early (for
you guys in the US) Happy New Year,

all the best for '09
KerrHappy New Year, Kerr! I'm off to my NY gig shortly.
2008 was a kickin' year for PARIS, adding up all the improvements it was
just a crazy spurt of platform activity. 2009 looks even *more* interesting.
All the best for the New Year, folks!

>Well, I agree with the China thing, the R&D department at Behringer
consists of a photocopier!... but re-creating a classic can be harder
than you think!
I have been working on small production runs of REDD mic Pre's and
Altec/RS124 compressors... reverse engineering some of the parts like
transformers can be quite a challenge. In one instance, the fellow I am
doing this for had to have the metallurgy done on the transformer plates
to figure out the balance of nickel and iron etc. This is key to the
sound of the units. Many of the recreations are using components that
are "close" and as such don't sound exactly like the originals.

>KerrHi Goran,
It's tricky, but it can be done. You have to set an effect send to pre fader
and mix your drums through the effect send. The pan and send volume work,
and you mix through these. Turn the track faders all the way down. Set
an external effect on your effect bus, and patch you compressor in there.
You really have to mix with your ears and not with your eyes, but it works.
All the best,
MikeWhich brings me to something I used to think about alot when I was working
on paris.
Apparently the patch bay and effects subsystem only exposes a small portion
of the possible patch points, and only allows you to connect them in the
ways exposed, even though there are potentially hundreds of other ways to
patch them.
I always wanted to figure out the patching code and make an 'effect' that
would allow you to communicate with the PSCL and repatch things in different
ways.
I know its possible because way, way back when there was a guy from ensoniq
who made a hack that allowed you to patch an effect over a single submix
just like goran is describing.

>Question: I was listening to a very long video on "why audio quality matters"
(this is about 2 1/2 hrs in total) where characteristics of favorite recordings
are discussed.
http://philoctetes.org/Past_Programs/Deep_Listening_Why_Audi o_Quality_Matters
and 3 themes of some favorite listenable recordings kept popping out at me.
1) space in the mix (density)
2) simplicity of signal chain
3) quiet (overall levels had a lot of true quiet - not just overcompressed
quiet - loudness wars)
obviously capturing a great performance is key, but it stood out to me that
tracks identified as great recordings seemed to have lower audio density.
(granted alot of the recordings seemed to be single takes in a the same
room too - maybe that's more of it).
I realize many of the older tracks were this way because of physical track
and time limitations that prohibited filling up of every sonic niche, but
it got me to wondering whether the current practice of stereo recording sources
may be contributing also once certain track thresholds are reached.
.... and along with that thought - have any of you purposefully attempted
to track more sources in mono to reduce the sonic footprint? Do you intentionally
force yourself to work with fewer tracks?
I guess at base I'm wondering if tracking multiple sources in stereo vs.
mono can contribute to mixes that in aggregate are harder to listen to.One could definitely overkill the listener with loudness/compression and the
amount of tracks these days. I've found that generally great tracks recorded
well/performed well have a whole lot more to do with vibe than a slew of
crap flung into the sonic shelf. Pink Floyd is a great example of this IMHO,
or acoustic dudes like Junior Brown. The Beatles. Mr Mister were masters of
understanding the process and how to best use it, though hardly anyone knew
it on their last official release *Go On*.
The hardest part, for me anyway, is knowing that the track is slamming, EQ'd
right, played for the proper spacing from the start and literally hearing
the end product before you get there. So much is dependant on the artist and
knowing them and where they want to go. In the old days there was
development time, and getting to know each other. We don't so much get that
anymore, and it's visible to me at least the suffering it can cause to the
end product.
That all in account, space is the most left out aspect of modern recording
that shouldn't have been left behind and I squarely blame green engineers,
auto tune/quantizing and product mentality. I do have to say samples have
come a long long way and can now be played like a real instrument with the
understanding that they are in and unto themselves and not necessarily what
they are emulating. There's little to no art in assembly line thinking and
anyone in the process can screw the whole thing up by making
production-minded moves and not caressing the muse properly.
Just one dude's opinion.

Happy New Year to my big, weird, dysfunctional extended family here on
the group.
Off to a week-long cruise down the Mexican Riviera, then three days in
Vegas paid for by a friend.
Woohoo!!!
pabIf I remember right their idea of copy protection is pretty goofy and
unfriendly to the end user. Although, NOTHING like the crap Tascam/Giga has
put me through. Hang in there bro, I'm sure you'll nail it down.

>This is a very interesting video. Well worth watching some serious heavy
hitters talk about sound.I don't have time to watch the video in the next while, but I know from my
days as a Graphic Designer, that space in the design was key. I believe that
aural and visual principles equate, and therefore agree that space in the
audio pallette
goes a long way to communicating the message. (This assumes that
the message would be compromised by increased density; in some
cases a more dense design/mix could be part of the point.)
Track count, including mono vs stereo recording, would play a
huge role, but so would other factors, like quality of gear, AD conversion
and summing techniques. Aaron's comments about performance are bang on too.

>Hi Aaron,
Well the card goes in first but no 'restart the computer' after
drivers were found. Still shows in Device manager as working.
I continue to load software. First I have to load about 30 codes
OR go get a 'keyfile' from their website. I can't my personal data
anywhere on their website so I manually type them in. Okay, now
it asks for hardware and software serial numbers. Hardware is easy
software is nowhere to be found even with a windows search. I
skip that. It continues to load the goods. I think, okay I'll just have to
wait for a software code then all will be fine. No. After the install
completes there is no .exe to start the program even in Program Files.
I find it on the CD and it tries to start except it's missing a couple of
other
files. I copy it to the program folder in all possible locations and even
do a
search for the missing files. Not there. No worky.
Now I'm wanting to uninstall and wait for guidance. The uninstall won't
work either.
Good thing there's a backup of before this incident.
Have a good weekend. I'll get it when someone calls or emails with support.
Dimitrios?
