Got an upgrade to Waves 3.5 and many of the plugs I used in 3.0 are now
stereo plugs in 3.5
Does the stereo plug use more HP than it's mono counterpart?
And if so is there a way to copy user settings from a stereo plug to a mono
version of the same plug
DonWhat's the advantage of this mod and how much would you charge to do one?

What would be a maximum viable length for SPDIF cables if I am clocking via
SPDIF as well as sending audio data? And how easy is it to crimp new
connectors if I need to?
Also, MEC SPDIF connectors do pass 24 bits, correct?
Thanks!

Unfortunately, the only appropriate answer is: “The longest cable that works”.
I am not being flippant. The quality of the cable, connectors, and even the
SPDIF driver-IC all contribute.
I have run a 25-foot SPDIF successfully if that helps.
MEC SPDIF is 24.
GeneI have Waves 3.6 (free upgrade from 3.5) that has mono versions not avaiable
in 3.5. The theory is that it takes more cpu to process half of a stereo
plug-in when you only need a mono. As far as presets; they have separate
libraries which I assume makes them incompatible.
Just a side note: Since I did my last computer upgrade I get a DC pop at
the beginning of a track playing back with DX plug-ins. Some plug-ins are
worse than others with the Waves RComp being most offensive. This can be
eliminated by placing a mute at the beginning of the track, but this doesn't
prevent it when starting mid-song. I would sure like to know if anyone has
ever experienced this before.

Working from the ground up, I have established this:
1. With 3 MECs in a 4-card system, external clcok, with no SPDIF devices
clocked thru Paris, I get a perfect system upon starting Paris and opening a
project. However, if I close the project and try to reopen it or another
project, things get squirrely, either digital distortion on playback or my
2nd submix not playing at all.
2. With two Kurzweil boxes patched in (and clocked) via SPDIF, things are
squirrely from the get-go. Sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes not. When
it works, it seems to be after intial start-up of Paris only; once again,
re-opening a project is sketchy as hell, with a few exceptions.
3. When I patch the Kurzweil boxes thru a Digipatch digital patchbay, it's
the same as scenario "2", only with even fewer instances of success.
I have tried connecting the 3rd MEC to card 4 instead of card 3, but that
seems to have no effect.
I have no BNC terminator plugs on the MECs, and plan to order those
tomorrow. I have some small hope that these will solve some of my troubles?
Anybody have any further suggestions?
JimmyI occasionally get the odd pop here and there and have always used your
method of adding dead air just before the offending section...especially mid
track

Don,
Render your Waves plugin tracks so you can still use
live plugins during mixdown but with only one
possible pop at the beginning in the track where the
object starts.

I continue to maintain that Paris will be a collectors item one day.
dbI just got a copy and it seems to be pretty good....we are in the
process of putting another quad xeon and a 1.2terabyte fiber channel
array in the graphics lab so I should be able to put record an entire game.

....mind you, strange I should say that, because now that we have digital
television over here and digital set to boxes are becoming more common, a
lot of people are actually beginning to have trouble with that too. "But,
but why can't I just press 9 on the TV remote to watch channel 9?"...

Hehe, indeed. ;o) Exactly what I'm afraid of. ;o)
I already have a paypal account. I'll let you know where it is if I find
I need to go get a UPS on the weekend. Though Rick has me wondering with
all these different account types whether I have the right type for people
to pay me. Do they all do that? Surely I chose a type which allowed people
to pay me. Oh, it's so long ago, and so many brain cells have died... ;o)

If your system doesn't work well, it's better to post what's wrong than trying
to fix it with someone elses config.

LOL! Thanks for the offer, but we're on 240V down here. ;o)
....and I'm highly suspicious it would be cheaper to buy one here. :o)
Cheers,
Kim.Kim,
Check the manufacturers site for the software. Tripplite and APC
have software available for download (free) on their site. I'm in if
the solution is a new one.

I went to the APC website and units that we pay 225.00 USD
are like 1250.00 Aus.
Holy Cow! The exchange rate is about 1.35 Aus dollars to USD,
so that does not account for it. I hope you have some locally-
made ones that are good...

Not quite in the mountains but in the "sand hills" of Fayetteville, NC near
Pinehurst.
If you're ever in the area feel free to call.
Andy Pow
Digital Wave Recording
127 Maxwell St
Fayetteville, NCYeh, well there is that also. You should see the way music gear is priced.
I remember way back in the late 90's when I was looking at monitor speakers.
Event 20/20Bas's were $350 on the shelf in the US, and on the shelf in a
music store here the tag said $1799. I don't quite know why. Someone's making
a killing I expect.
I'm going to have to look into it. I'm pretty sure the old Sola brand was
Australian made, and they've apparently merged with Powerware who I beleive
are also Australian. They seem a little cheaper. I'm not going one of the
Asian imports again after the effort of this last one... unless I can get
it going with software tweaks.
Mind you I can get an APC CS 500VA for $139. Sure, it's only going to last
20 minutes, but at least it should be good enough to stop the spikes. Power's
only going to go off for longer than 20 minutes once a year anyhow.
Cheers,
Kim.

Much as it sounds good in theory I think by the time you added up all the
extra bits like shipment, stepdown transformer and all the other bits and
peices that would be needed to cater to the voltage difference, it wouldn't
really be worth it.
I'm sure I can find something for under $200 down here...

Spend the extra though and get both a good brand and one with AVR (automatic

it is the least we can do.
Tripplite is another option and while they don't tell you the aus.
price on the site, they do have a rep assigned to you all.

Or the APC RS 1000VA for $469. That would be plenty of mumbo, but I assume
the 1500VA would keep it running for longer if power dropped out for a while.
Or we can get a Powerware 5110 1000VA for $219, which is more the price range
I was thinking. Of course I want one that works properly. AVR sounds good.
I'll check some specs when I get home.
Obviously it's not such a big deal if 20 people put in $20 each instead of
$10, as opposed to one person (me) forking out $500.
....and of course every $10 you guys put in becomes like $13 at this end.
Cheers,
Kim.

www.studiomanitou.comStrewth!!! ;o) Tell us what you need. One morning you will wake up to an
invitation to a pub. When you get to the pub, it will be packed with people.
All of your friends will be there (and the ones there that you've never met
will be us) and there will be this big cake and the band will start playing
hail to the Queen, when all of a sudden Naomi Watts will jump out of the
cake, clad in leather weilding a bullwhip in one hand and and APC in the
other It will then be up to you to errrrrrr......liberate it in whatevery
way seems appropriate.
This is the only condition I have for sending you APC money.

>Hi John,
I know you've posted a lot of questions about your problems over the last
while, and I don't remember all the ins and outs, so I appologize if I'm
repeating what's allready been said (maybe even by me).
I used PARIS all day yesterday transferring tapes - at least 9 or 10 hours
straight and no plobelms at all. It can just work.
To succeed, PARIS (in my expereince) needs:
lots of power - true power 550 PS for me. 450 wasn't enough.
lots of cooling - I cut a hole in the side of my cases and mount a fan to
blow air away from the PARIS cards. No more clicks or freezing here - ever.
It's not that hard to do, either. I just use a drill to make multiple "punches"
in a circle and cut out what's left with some snips. Then, I drill the mounting
holes and mount the fan. Voila. I also leave an empty PCI space between
my cards to allow more air to get around them. They need it.
No bad DX plugs. Try running with DX disabled - if it's stable, you know
that a bad DX plug is the problem.
No hyperthreading/dual CPUS - this is a rule I'm breaking successfully.
Go figure.
Non-defective cards - I'm suspicious that this is your problem. If you've
tried the card(s) in another computer with a clean install and all the afore
mentioned requirements (especially the cooling one) were met, you probably
have a defective/dammaged card. At least they are cheap these days.
I hope this helps, John. It's working for me.
Good luck!

If I quit PARIS and reopen then everything works fine

Read the Schneier article. It's long but it's really good and he wrote the
blowfish algorithm (and was almost prosecuted for it) so his security/privacy
bona fides are unimpeachable.

Funny, seems that shuffleboard wasn't the only thing tht was positively

thereafter I developed allergies to everything that grew in Austin, my hair

fore this 6V goes out
of the power supply put a 3300-4700uF/16V electrolytic with negative to the
ground.
Same for anode voltage, might be 120V-170V so put a 22uF/250V there.
Hope this helps.

Dimitrios

I got it solved. It was the Magma Chasis's power supply was not "seated"
into slot properly. Paris is working fine now.
