I think you are on to something with the effects update installing into the
wrong directory. The weirdest part of this is that it is an unhandled exception,
not an error 1/1, which suggests that it is not an IRQ issue.

The only time I've seen that is with a bad effect.

It could be a direct X issue, too, even if there are no audio dx plugins
installed because video apps and drivers install dx stuff, too.

Anyway, I hope this gets solved soon.
