------=_NextPart_000_00F2_01C814CA.3D733990--I looked at this system at AES:

http://www.patchbays.com/Shorti_DB25.htm

The DB25 interface is becoming ubiquitous, not just in Pro Tools. Even without
the need for DB25 integration, this allows for a fully setup bay with XLR
ends at a variety of lengths for about 2K. The “normal” jumpers were solid
and easy to change. This kind of system is appealing because it can easily
be repurposed or moved.
A custom wired 96 would be far more, and DIY is murder on Bantam/TT.

That's nice Gene. I'm tempted to jump on this. I've got enough TRS>XLR and
TRS>TRS snakes around here that I could easily Eay them and have enough left
over to pay for one of these systems.

Deej,
Hows about I buy you a bucket a chowda if we lose and you
can send me a fatted calf if we win?

My grill is on and steak knife is ready.

Good luck with Becket and/or Pappelbon on the mound.
Ha!,
Tom

Or you can come fix my Paris rig instead . . .

I learned tonight that I have fried two new Mecs again.
The EDS cards are all good. I hopefully can
fix the mecs for resale with the chips I've bought.

I have what is probably a messed up Magma. Maybe fixed
now that there's a new PS but I'm not sure and don't care
anymore. It will be at least $300 to ship/repair.
I have possibly a messed up mobo or power supply=20
in my Paris computer also. It works fine without eds cards
installed though. Not sure about this just yet.

The eds cards work fine with another Mec and 442 in another
computer.

My plan is to keep a two card system with 16 in and 16 out with an
ADAT card in one MEC. I am there now. Can you say summing bus?

I also need to up the analog ins in my Cubase rig to get it ready for
prime time. I wanted the Aurora but that is looking like $4,000=20
after all is said and done. I guess that the Apogee is also at least
that much. Those are only 16 in/out. Not quite enough for my basics
sessions sometimes. Both are too much me to shell out and my heart=20
isn't in it for that much scratch. =20

Heres my Cubase rig as is:

-Cubase 2.01 (4.0 sitting in the box)
-AMD 2.4 dually (4.8)
-3 GB Ram (haven't ran the patch yet) Anyone got that with =
instructions?
-7200 IDE C:
-7200 SATA Audio 16MB Cache 500GB
-7200 SATA Sample sets 16MB cache 500GB
-PCIe dual head graphics
-1 PCI UAD-1 card=20
-1x PCI Scope Pro Classic with 16 adat in/out, MIDI, 1 SPDIF in/out, 2 =
analog in/out
- Frontier Tranzport USB
-Wireless Mouse keyboard USB
- Cubase dongle USB
-backup audio drive USB
-1 PCIe slot available
-1 PCI slots available
( Delta 66 not installed 4 analog in/out 1spdif in/out))

Here's what I need:
24 x A to D - D to A in/out. 96k at least probably PCIe compatible.
Thinking of the future here.

Features wise I like the Motu at $1400 or less
http://www.motu.com/products/pciaudio/24IO/body.html

Already owning a Scope card leads me to this but not enough ins
and I think I will need a Z link attached to my card. $1150 with Z link.

Are there any other contenders? I'm not finding anything.

Thanks for your insite and all the previous help.
Tom

why wireless???.........this adds potential for trouble, IMHO

For 24 Analog I/O at 96KHz, you're looking at quite a cash outlay =
unless you go with firewire. A dedicated PCI or PCIe FW card and 3 x of =
these might get you there at a good price though:

Tom the MOTU units do have more I/O options than anyone else, but the
converters supposedly aren¹t up to the level of other units probably not
bad though. Another option, if you don¹t mind putting a little more into it
would be to go with an RME HDSP Digiface (PCIe) and 3-lightpipe ADDAs (RME
ADI8s, Aurora, Apogee, etc) - that would give you 24 in and out.

Firewire is another option, but PCI/PCIe should give you better bandwidth
for higher I/O, though firewire may be fine with 24 in and out.

Dedric

>Hi Tom,

You stole my choice, the Motu 24i/o. I've used this card and i/o device with
DP and Logic audio. To me, it's the best sound unit Motu makes and it's been
around since 2001.

Can't say enough good things about it. The price is right. The analog i/o
is more than right.

Another choice would be to get a Mackie Oxyx 1640/with Firewire option. With
the 1640 you are killing several stones at once:

http://www.mackie.com/products/onyx1640/
-16 very good mic pres that can hold it's own with a lot of top dollar so
called boutique pres

-Zero latency montioring!! (Hey It'sa true analog mixer)

-Talk back

-96kHz FireWire option for streaming 18 independent channels of audio to
computer with near-zero latency .

-Balanced direct outs for every channel via DB-25 connections

-Drivers for Windows and OSx

Deej,
Regarding the PreSonus FirePod:
I don't need pres at all. The price is about the same as the Motu.
Not sure the quality would be all that much better for about the same =
money.
Too much circuitry getting in the way there I think from my higher end =
pres.

I guess I really want pristine audio in a converter. Maybe I should =
bite the bullet
and get the Aurora or Apogee. Maybe an outboard PerSonas for the last 8 =
to go=20
into my Scope ADAT in. Problem is PCI and PCIe slots are hard to come =
by
in my rig. One of each are left plus firewire.

Maybe a new Magma is also in store for me? No, too much $ for my client =
base.
I am trying to cut back in general. Firewire (I've heard Chris say it's =
often trouble?)
or USB is an option if fast enough for the application.
Thanks for your input once again.
Tom

I learned tonight that I have fried two new Mecs again.
The EDS cards are all good. I hopefully can
fix the mecs for resale with the chips I've bought.

I have what is probably a messed up Magma. Maybe fixed
now that there's a new PS but I'm not sure and don't care
anymore. It will be at least $300 to ship/repair.
I have possibly a messed up mobo or power supply=20
in my Paris computer also. It works fine without eds cards
installed though. Not sure about this just yet.

The eds cards work fine with another Mec and 442 in another
computer.

Be sure to install the most recent upgrade

-AMD 2.4 dually (4.8)

What mobo???....will it support an Opteron 185? If so, you will get =

OK so far

-Wireless Mouse keyboard USB

why wireless???.........this adds potential for trouble, IMHO

- Cubase dongle USB
-backup audio drive USB
-1 PCIe slot available
-1 PCI slots available

Here's what I need:
24 x A to D - D to A in/out. 96k at least probably PCIe compatible.
Thinking of the future here.

Features wise I like the Motu at $1400 or less
http://www.motu.com/products/pciaudio/24IO/body.html

Already owning a Scope card leads me to this but not enough ins
and I think I will need a Z link attached to my card. $1150 with Z =
link.

Are there any other contenders? I'm not finding anything.

Thanks for your insite and all the previous help.
Tom

For 24 Analog I/O at 96KHz, you're looking at quite a cash outlay =
unless you go with firewire. A dedicated PCI or PCIe FW card and 3 x of =
these might get you there at a good price though:

anywhere near whatever level that I've managed to play at thus
far. Which brings me to random thought #2...

2.) So in a slightly nostalgic (will I be able to play half-ass
decent again?) mode due to #1 , I broke out some things that I
had done in the past - stupid, right? lol Anyway, I hadn't
heard this stuff in a LONG time - some years, actually, and a
few things occurred to me, namely:

2a.) Analog tape absolutely has something different on the
low end that I just don't believe you can get out of digital
AT ALL. Now this is my own stuff, so I know it well;
recorded to analog on two different formats (2" 24 track
Dolby SR, and 1" 16-track DBX) and mixed through three
different consoles (Trident 24 & SSL 4000 for the various 2"
stuff, and a Tascam of some kind for the 1" stuff), and some
of it was mixed down to tape & some of it was mixed down to
DAT, and the ONE THING that's consistent among it, is a
certain sort of smooth strength to the low end... it's not a
distortion (Charles Dye), it's not just a "bump" somewhere
(Because the tape speeds varied - Tascam 1" was 15IPS,
Studer 2" was at 30IPS, so the "bumps" are at different
frequencies), it's a certain something that's totally
missing from digital, and as I said, the only way I can
describe it is that it's very strong & present, yet smooth.
To me, digital low end sounds "hollow" compared to this.
Just pointing this out. It's what miss about tape, I think.

2b.) The dbx 902 is absolutely the best de-esser on the
planet - I need to get one & just leave it inserted on lead
vocal channnels - or someone needs to port this to a plugin.
Listening to it again, on stuff that I know that I used it
on, really reveals this. No plugin comes close - again, it's
a vibe thing ifyaknowwhatimsayin'.

2c.) I know it was an 80's trick; but DAMN, triggering some
pink or white noise on the snare really makes it sound
farking HUGE! lol I may start doing this again! lol

and finally on the nostalgia front...

2d.) Damn, I could sing a lot higher then.
2e.) Damn, I could play a lot faster then.

lol

4.) I'm in a creative slump/composers' block - brought on by
a combination of external influences, no doubt... too much
metal exposure recently, for one - it's hard for me to get out
of one mode & into another - I find I have to kind of "purify"
or go through "musical detox" from one genre to another, so I
listen to something completely opposite of what I've been doing
for a period. When I did this all the time it was easy to
switch - I could be nimble in terms of working on &
contributing to a jazz project one week & a C&W project the
next, but it seems with greater distances between projects &
more time spent on each particular one, it's harder to get out
of a certain mode & get back into something else, like writing,
for example (in this case). Ever experience that? Used to be
I'd listen to "So" over &am

ns!

I agree with the analog tape/bass phenomenon you describe.
I can't play as fast or as clean as I used to.
I never used a 902 but I've also never been satisfied with
any software DeEsser.
White/pink noise can be wicked cool on a snare.
I haven't written a new song in over a year.
Music history always brings big picture emotions out of me too.

I'm sure tomorrow is playing a big part in your mind set. This
will be the start of another level for you. Believe it!
I wish you the best of luck for your surgery!
Sincerely,
Tom

1.) My finger surgery is tommorrow, and although this is - as I
am continuing to try to remember - a VERY minor thing in the
grand scheme of my body & overall health, it's still traumatic
mentally, because I don't know how much flesh I'll have left.
Doc says that he thinks the location & extent of it makes me a
good candidate for that Mohs' surgery I mentioned before, but
it's pretty deep - and he can't guarantee how it will heal/how
much will regenerate. Really, this is probably nothing, and
people have played better than I can play with much greater
impediments - I think I am so nervous about it because
honestly, so much of what I do is at the edge of my abilities
anyway, I think if I lose any technical abilities at all, it's
going to just throw me back into not even being able to execute
anywhere near whatever level that I've managed to play at thus
far. Which brings me to random thought #2...

will fix the problem?
Just to give you a little more info. I just tried a bounce to disk of a mix
that only contained 1 track of UAD plugs..Uad Fairchild and Cambridge. I
still got clicks and pops (about 6 total). when I get rid of all the UAD
plugs there are no clicks or pops.
I have 3 UAD cards.
I'd be willing to give it a try. Thanks

My wife calls me up on the cell while I am at NAMM.
(about an hour away) she has locked herself out of the
house....

My friend asks me what is wrong. "Oh, the wife has locked
herself out of the house."

he goes:

"Oh, I am so sorry you have to leave. I know how much you
like the NAMM show"

And I go, HEY, I am not leaving. We have this rule...

So she called the locksmith. No harm no foul.

The trick of course is getting teenagers to understand the
rule...

She could neglect our national security interests and pony up to the chinese

considered a disaster that makes Bush's policies seem trivial since that the
reason the Iraq war never ended.

This sounds like you have a bad/corrupt set of files to me. Did you try =
another installer?
Also, if you still have 2.1 or 2.2, have you tried that as well?
If you pulled this from an image (ghost, acronis, PING, etc...) I'd bet =
on a bad image. If not, I'd bet on bad installer. Either way, I think =
you're fooling with corrupted files.

Hey everyone,
I am functional but barely right now. One 442 with no SPDIF is no =
bargain...

Major problems with newest install and computer:

At Paris start up it says: StockFx.dll not found twice.
It also says: mod3a.dll in system32 folder not a valid Windows image.

I think I should just remove the mod3a.dll from the system32 folder =
right?
StockFx.ddl should have been part of the Paris install right? Where
can I find it and where does it go? Paris Pro folder?

Paris also works smoothly except two of the three C-16s won't work =
entirely right.
I tried to get them all working in classic mode but the configuration =
is never saved.
It remains C-16 1 is Classic and 2 & 3 are Pro mode.
I saved the project before resarting though. Hmmm? Everything else =
seems to save ok.
The audio on card B never works. I have to assign Submix 2 to Card C. =
I've tried two cards
with the same results. I'll try another. Paris closes fine but a =
Windows error comes up and=20
asks if I want to send it to their sorry asses everytime. No BSOD =
though.

Lots of nutty stuff here but at least it kinda works.
Any tips would be great at this time. I have two days to get in tip =
top shape for
real work. I wish I knew more.

Thanks for all the help you guys.
