ey Thad! I was checking Dell's prices, I didn't see any Core 2 Duo lap tops
for $750.00. I could be wrong, but it looks like they start at $1299. I
wonder what they would cost similarly configured?

I think Apple typically makes more margin per unit, well that's what I've
read. As a dealer margins were always tight. In the past Apple manufactured
proprietary hardware, and they just didn't sell the number of units that
PC manufactures did to have low prices. With Intel, it's a whole new ball
game for Apple. I would think Dell still buys 10 times as much stuff from
Intel as Apple does. Dell probably gets better pricing.

I have seen Dell do a thousand dollar rebate on their lap tops. When that
happens, Apple will not be able to compete.

(ext HD), and that is then given to
the post house.
We are using my PT SMPTE Slave Driver that I pulled out of my studio to act
as the master clock for the session and the cameras, so that everything will
stay in sync, the betacams drift but not too much, and they can resync them.
As we are in Australia the T/C is 25fps so thats less of a problem, but I'm
assuming that the PT can clock to MTC as a slave for the session...it must
be able to...mustn't it?

here is what I use when writing:

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?produc t=1153

My old model was 40 bucks at Costco. When I have a song idea,
I play the part into the little recorder, then put the guitar down
and pull out paper or Word on the comp and work on lyrics and
melodies.

Hell, I can't engineer and write songs. I can't even play guitar
and write songs. Writing compelling melodies and lyrics takes
being in a quiet creative space with nothing else to think about,
and letting the box play the parts.

When the tune is done, or mostly done, then I go to the DAW and
start developing it.

You may be different, but being good at recording is a totally
different act than being good at songwriting and one will crowd
out the other.

You don't need a computer to write songs. IMHO

best
