Are you saying that Logics's editing in on par with Nuendo/Cubase, Pro Tools,
Samplitudes??
If you are, then you're not really familiar with the formentioned DAWs and
their Superior workflow. Nuendo's Audio recording , editing is a work of
art adn very powerful . As is Samplitude and yes, even Pro Tools editing
is Light-Years ahead of Logic's antiquated app.. It's not even p for discussion.
Apple and everybody knows that Logic,in it's current state is way behind.
I'm sorry.
From the rumors I hear, the new DAW from apple with not even contain the
name Logic..
And, I'm not comparing Logic to PAris. Paris never had a completed midi sequencer.
I'm comparing Logic to the Big 3(Nuendo, Pro Tools & Cubase)
I could run down a host featurs hat Logic Lacks, but you can search the forums
(Gearslutz,even Logic user forums)..
It's a fine midi sequencer, with audio..Where as, the others are fine audio
recorders,mixers...with midi..
Please stop comparing Logic with Paris..Paris is a fantastic Audio recorder/Mixer.
Where as Logic leavea lot to be desired in the big time tracking (audio)
department.. I and many others (Logic owners) would choose Logic to track
a band session.. No-way..

You've been warned dammit!!!LaMont, I AM comparing Logic to PARIS, obviously. This is a PARIS board
and Deej has a lot of PARIS experience, as do I. And PARIS rocks for audio.
If it's too much trouble to run down the list of features you think
Logic lacks when compared to other programs, just list the top three
that YOU think make it somehow unusable.
I can tell you that there is nothing lacking that keeps me from
recording, mixing and editing in Logic Pro 7.2.3. I'm sure it could be
improved and streamlined, but it's already sufficiently powerful to get
work done, and sufficiently amazing to be rather happy with it.
For that matter, there was nothing critical missing in PARIS that kept
me from recording, mixing and editing. Although the MIDI/soft synth
integration, larger track counts and ability to automate everything were
big steps up when I moved to Logic.
Cheers,
-Jamie

Thought the extension on the skimmer pole was gonna break a
couple of times. Had to use the net like a spatula to scrape
the paper off the bottom, then twist it around to snag pieces
of it as the paper floated up a bit.
My hands are almost thawed now (39-degree water dripping off a
metal pole is not a good feeling lol!).
Fun. Last year we had such crappy wet weather during the summer
I was only able to use the pool about half the time I was the
year before... if that happens again, I may just fill it in &
build a drum room out there.

>OK y'all, since I know there are a few guitar heads out there. As most of
you know, I'm very much into the fancy new stuff when it comes to my music.
I'm into hip hop, breakbeats, dub step, software synths, and all of that.
But, after I pop in the phone booth and emerge as my alter ego, I also play
geetar in a rock'n'roll band. With guitar gear I'm positively Holocene in
my tastes. For almost ten years I've played the same amp, a Top Hat Club
Royale, basically an AC-30 top boost knockoff preamp with an AC-15 power
section. I've usually put a power soak on it and played it full out.
So, today I finally had a chance to really try out the Savage that a friend
is selling. In my not so humble opinion I think I've always had some of the
best guitar tone I've ever heard. More than once someone has offered to buy
my Top Hat from me on the spot. The Savage is AT LEAST as good as the Top
Hat. And, more importantly, the most stunning example of class A 6V6 amplification
I have heard this side of a lovingly restored tweed Deluxe owned by another
friend. It doesn't do clean at a level that would be useful outside a studio
(though it's clean tones are spectacular, I think it would make a superb
Grant Green sounding jazz amp), but the breakup goes from gorgeous Deluxe
to surprisingly Marshall sounding when dimed.
A lot of amp makers blackball their one really low wattage model with a crappy
sounding eight inch speaker and a sub par cabinet, I think because it's just
harder to justify

It's still here and I have paid for it instead of sending it back.
Do you still find that it brings a

Yes.
Still worth the
> money?
I traded some services, cabling and gear that I was going to sell anyway
plus $800.00 cash for mine. These are $1650.00 directly from the factory or
$1750.00 from Mercenary. Were I going to have to pay $1650.00 for it I'm not
sure, but I really like what it does for the Cubase 2 bus. Thing is, that I
don't really think the Cubase 2 bus sounds bad without it now that I've
accustomed myself to it a bit. If I were using Paris, I wouldn't send the
money on it. Paris doesn't need it...cubase......maybe, depending on what
you're looking for. I like that *familiar* sound I've been hearing for years
with Paris so the 5042 has eased the transition to the different sonics of
Cubase. As I use Cubase more and more, I find I'm able to get some mighty
pleasing sonics out of it anyway. I just have this sneaking suspicion that
UA Dis going to slap us upside the head with a tape emulator pretty soon.
That's the kind of thing they do very well. It could well be superior to the
Neve 5042. Those guys are good at what they do and tape emulation has been
at the top of the request list on their forum for quite a while. Wouldn't
surprise me if they had an Ampex and a Studer on a bench somewhere with
codegnomes crawling all over them.
Unless I had $1600.00 that I would die if I didn't spend immediately, I
might hold off until summer NAMM and see what else pops up.......but
yeah.....I do like it and use it a lot.

Yeah, I was watching that guy's stuff in case I could pick up another
EDS fairly cheaply. When I saw where all that stuff was going, I just
shook my head and walked away.

If they like the "modded" u-67's (assuming you're referring to
the very popular Stephen Paul sub-micron mod), then I would
recommend trying the Mojave MA200. Not exactly like the "S.P.-
67's" (which I've heard & used before), but very warm & fuzzy &
in the same kinda balpark. The diaphragm on the MA-200 is only
3 microns - so, not as thin as Stephen's 0.9-micron mod, but
still half the thickness of most common LDC diaphragms, and in
that regard, is coser to "that" sound, and at a grand, is
about a third of the price you'd pay for what I've seen clean
UM57's priced out at recently.
>If you were buying a mic for female and male vocals in a funk
>band, would you select the UM57?
Dunno, never used one - only answering the portion of your query
that I'm able to :)
>What else would you consider (from any manufacturer, at the
>price of a UM57 or lower)?
Not knowing if you've found a bitchin' clean minty-fresh
UM57 for $500 somewhere I will assume you mean in the "$3k-ish
or less" range. Here's my list:
Neumann M-149:
Sometimes can be found in the $3k range, sometimes more, but if
you can find a good clean affordable one, go for it. Very
smooth, almost round-ish tone (not nasal, or boomy, nor "peaky"
up top), no real peaks or valleys, very even, yet open sound.
Multi-pattern feature is nice to have, too.
Soundelux E251C:
One of my favorite mics, without a doubt, the 251C is the
cardioid-only version. Tough to find used, but if you do find
one it'll be in the high end of the price range we're talking
about. KILLER high end (VERY smooth & airy!), and great
presence, too... proximity effect is very noticeable if you
want it to be (ie: if worked in-close).
Soundelux E47C:
Another cardioid-only version. Absolutely kicks ass. I can't
say as I've ever seen one used for sale, but I would imagine
it'd possibly be in the same/similar price range as the 251C
used (even though it's more $$$ new). This mic has a less-
pronounced high end than the 251C and more proximity effect,
and it's a very BIG sound overall... just another super-high-
quality, low-noise tube mic.
Here's a multi-pattern version on e-bay now... only one bid -
weird... maybe your friend can snag it!
http://cgi.ebay.com/Soundelux-E-47_W0QQitemZ110114632536QQih Z001QQcategoryZ133011QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
B.L.U.E. Kiwi:
Easily one of the best mics you can buy for under $2k new. Right
now you can get one with a free "Robbie" tube Preamp thrown in
(never used one of those pre's so I dunno how they sound).
The sound to me is very reminiscent of a mix between a -67
the -149... best way I can describe it. It's not a tube mic,
though; just tonally, to me, it sounds kind of like a blend of
those two mics' characteristics - best way I can describe it,
anyway... warm bottom end, but not wooly or fuzzy, and open
top end, but not hyped, either, and very clean there, too.
B.L.U.E. Cactus:
I have a Cactus capsule in my M149 (the original worked fine,
but really was poorly-maintained & had some of the sputtering
coming off), and I can only assume that the Cactus with it's
electronics would at least sound somewhat reasonably close to
my -149, since the capsule is the main voice of the mic anyway.
The guys at B.L.U.E. told me that the Cactus Capsule would be
the closest to the M149's stock one and honestly I think they
were right-on, because I don't hear much difference, if any,
except for better articulation now. You can get the Cactus for
about $2500 new.
B.L.U.E. Blueberry:
If it's the high end of that modded -67 your friend liked
(again, assuming it was the common S.P. mod), maybe try a
Blueberry! A grand new, and $600-$800 used.
Regular ol' U87 (new or used):
New they're $2800-ish... used you can sometimes snag 'em for as
low as $1300 - still a good mic that never totaly sucks on
anything.
There's a few anyway.
NeilAwesome, thanks Neil! I'll pass your advice along. They need to jump
quickly so this is really helpful!
Cheers,
-Jamie
