I love the Addictives because they sit nicely in that sweet spot between the extremes. They punch through very nicely when needed, and their brush kits are now excellent.I just used Superior Drummer 2 on a project I am working on. I have the NY, Nashville, and Vintage packs and no they do not need lot of processing...mostly some eq and comp to sit in the mix but with all the different kits, pieces to build a kit, and ability to separate and mix to taste I liked having a good sound right from the start. I did have one person the other day ask who played the drums and where did I track them so that was good.  Their midi packs are pretty good too and can easily be tweaked as I am sure they all can.
PS...addictive was my other choice when looking but got a 1/2 deal on this FWIWGuys - I assume you're using Reaper for much of your work, esp drum editing. I'm also assuming you're using BFD etc to augment live recorded drums.
How do you trigger the samples, or I guess I'm asking how do you create the MIDI files to trigger the samples? Right now, I'm creating MIDI from Logic and basically doing a raw drum mix on my Mac, then importing the stereo audio into paris for buss proce

nd of track I'm doing, I have five primary products I use: BFD, Superior, Culture, Storm Drum and Scarbee Imperial Drums. I keep the Scarbee stuff for special occasions since not too many people seem to have it. Culture for percussion. Storm Drum is for the big hits. BFD and Superior have been bread and butter stuff for me for years. The question for me is whether I should upgrade to BFD2 and/or get the newer Toontrack stuff...Anyone using actual audio tracks as the basis for triggering drum samples on a PC?
If so, how do you do it? Logic (and PT) have great one step functions to convert transients to MIDI, to trigger BFD, SD, EZD etc. how do you do this on a PC?
NIce workWell, most folks would say that treating the final stereo mix as a whole with separate processing is the key to getting the end result you're looking for. Whether it's a Finalyzer 96K or analog boxes is up to your preferences and budget. The Finalyzer goes for pretty cheap used - it's almost 10 years old now. I bring the bounced stereo stems back onto 2 tracks and use Native eqs with an Alan Smart C1 +/or a Fatso externally. Izotope Ozone is also a good all in one software tool for Mast

hat count for 2?Interested in the line-lump option Kerry mentioned, probably won't ever be able to go for the motorized faders because of the $$$. I only do this for fun...and as a hobby.This is the way Paris handles all Native Inserts, allowing you to save your own settings back at a time when not every plugin came with that feature.
If you use FXpansion wrapper FFX4 Chainer and select that first, then load the plugs through that GUI, you are able to prescribe the window size for each of the plugs.
Using the FFX4 Chainer has a procedure though, and another Parisite got it going for me, so I'm not an expert. Check through Dimitrios' posts.
Also not sure if Ozone 4 plays well within FFX4 chainer, it should though.
And - there's another piece of software that will scan plugs as you install them, that takes care of a lot of problem plugs (like Waves 7). Dimitrios' threads reference it as well.

Well that solves that. Much appreciated. I'm fine running it this way.
I try to run a simple a system as I can. The only upgrading I may do in the future is add an expansion rack to house 4 EDS cards with a PCI-e cable to a Win7 at 64 bit machine or above system. Maybe a year or two down the line.
Right now 2 EDS in my XP machine does the job but occasionally I sure would like that 3rd card. I've got room but it'll drain my 550w PS which now supports 2 DVDs, 2 Hard drives, 2 EDS, floppy, PCI video, 6 USB.

WayneHello all, I have a problem I haven't experienced before.
I have a fresh install of 3.0 on a new XP machine, single core but with Mr. Audits new drivers. Paris will boot and I can load in
projects and audio, however no response at all, I get all windows, but no playback, no C16 action, just dead, it won't respond in any way, I haven't found any info in the forum with the same issue.
All lights blink as if it wants to work properly, card shows up,
Mec blinks, looks like it should work, I'm scratching my head?

I wonder if it is the EDS card not seated right. Also try to find out if your PCI slot is 3.3v or 5v just in case.

7 drivers? Mike if you need beta tester let me know. The C16 will act weird if you have the wrong type selected.
If you've got the black classic then uncheck the C16 pro in the setting window.
If you've got the blue pro, vice versa.Win7 32-bit appears to be working stably with updated versions of the XP drivers
Win7 64-bit still under way but had a huge breakthrough last week so barring the completely unforeseen, they're pretty close.

I am ex paris user/lover from long ago, who has long since gotten rid of his paris hardware. I'm looking for someone in the Los Angeles area that might be able to spend a couple (or a few?) hours exporting approximately 7 to 10 projects (and audio) to formats i can currently use. (or ... is there software that can read and convert ppj's and their audio without paris hardware?).
I'm perfectly willing to pay for the service.

Hi Oui_Oui,
The XP driver does indeed work with Windows 7 32 bit. The main thing is that the PARIS application has to be run as administrator, or the PSCL can't open some shared memory. But, it works fine.
I'm going to be spending a day on the 64 bit driver this week. I'm very excited about how things are going.

We finally got a RADAR V installed into the studio and soon as I ran a mix I did last week I stopped in mid sentence and immediately thought PARIS
That warmth and depth that we have all grown to love and/or take for granted was in my face today and these tracks were recorded on a Mackie mixer to a fire wire card into a lap top...hell even the owner couldn't believe the difference.
I brought those mixes home tonight and ran them in PARIS and the mixes were very similar if not almost identical when I cranked the volume to get my speakers pushing some air.
Bottom line, it'll be a treat to use this system at the studio in conjunction with my PARIS rig at home.
i'm in LA but my paris rig isn't built i just have the mobo and my paris equipment. my eds cards aren't even in the virtua via chassis  Just a thought here but Reaper will read the PAF files and you could use it to convert them to wav files...unfortunately if your projects have a lot of edits, specific cross fades or time locations you might be SOL

Intelligent Devices was not only still giving out license codes for PARIS, they've actually stuck their toes back in the waters of pro audio again with some very cool VST plugins.thank you Mike

It might be wise to bounce each submix to their stereo stems. That way in case any files get out of alignment you can probably get them lined up again.
And/or render every track in each submix to time zero. Remder track to disc not selection to disc. If I recall correctly, the render track starts anything on that channel at time zero.
It would be nice to know if Paris just makes that 3rd submix a virtual with all the edits, automation and mixer settings intact, from which you can then change cards in the gloabl mixer and run live as one of the other submixes become virtual.
Let us know what happens.

Hence my questionYou're all good, as long as you don't need to exactly recreate a specific mix (since that would depend on you also having the same VST plugins and outboard gear the original rig had).
if you're just opening it to export the audio it's trivial to organize. Start by opening the song folder and pulling out the "submix" audio files - they can cause confusion. Next, open the PPJ and click through the indignant "hey, this isn't my rig!" stuff. See how many submixes it has (we know it came from a three _card_ system but maybe he only used one submix - or maybe he used all eight) - two of them will now be "card" submixes. If you have more active submixes than cards, set one of those two to "virtual" and update it. Repeat as needed.
A couple of important things to bear in mind: before you tear your hair out, not being able to get audio out probably means the original session used different hardware outputs: pull Mixer A, MEC Modules A and Mec Master A into the patch bay and make sure both monitor and master outs from the Mixer A go to the same place yours do (if you don't want to get caught like me, refresh your memory in advance).
Closely related - if you still can't get audio out, make sure nothing external was patched across the "master" inserts using the "external" plugin, that's a
showstopper (since that external gear's no longer there to "close the loop").
Then you begin the long process of "render and recheck" - or alternately, if you own AATranslator, you're basically nearly done - have PARIS "export as OMF", boot AAT and have it turn the OMF into whatever your client needs (it'll pay for itself this first time out).Thanks to you all for your responses, I am still having a

Why wouldn't you just dump the tracks to your Paris rig via the ethernet connection after recording them onto the HD 24?
Otherwise I think you're gonna need a BRC and 2 more ADAT cards if you want 24 tracks at a time via lightpipe
Although there is the midi and SMPTE option but I wouldn't go that route as that also requires buying stuff and quite franlky lightpipe and ADAT sync are the way to go in my books.Hi Kerry
Just an FYI - lately the scherzo driver thread keeps indicating it has a new post but it doesn't and the name on the last poster is wrong...you are the last posterWeird, I have Michael as being the last poster (his reply to my optical cables post) and no sign of a "recent posts" light, but I've just run some server maintenance scripts to be on the safe side - let me know if that changes anything.Nope the indicator was green again this morning on the scherzo thread.

edit : I just added a post...will see what happensI'm no PC expert (and often not even very PC  ) but the IRQ issues on PC have been minimized by Mike's great work on the multicore drivers. Here's a thought for you - have you considered putting together a Hackintosh and having a dual-boot system? I did it, and it's worked great.I have heard the term Hackintosh but never checked it out. I googled it and looks like running Mac on a PC. I assume you are running Paris booted into Windows. Whats your set up. Tell me the advantages for you over just running on a PC without the Hackintosh. BTW I have several macs I use for everything else but my goal is a music only computer that puts all software on one (More Modern) platform. Not many options with mac OS9 and older macs that can run it.

Looks like from pics of the MBO that the rear of middle eds card might get in the way of the SATA sockets. Hard to tell from a pic.

I going for a rack mount case which will give me some more room.
I am a bit squeamish leaving my mac behind, like deserting one of my children. Its still runs well, just to limited and getting harder to keep up. Running SATA drives with firmtek SATA Card in that one so I might be able to use the drives in the new build.

It's no exaggeration to say that releasing this driver will be an unprecedented moment in the history of digital audio. No digital audio equipment has ever been supported for such a long time after it's been discontinued. Based on the lifecycle of Xp, there's a good chance that we'll see some working Paris systems running on Win 7 64 bit in the twenties.  I'm so stoked about it, too. I called in to work on the day I was planning to spend on the driver last week, but I have done more testing with the double buffering, and I've yet to have a single problem. It's just been perfect. I can't wait to get it finished. Windows 7 64 is really, really nice.

hey folks. i've just purchased a second hand eds and mec.. and now need to get software installed (i'll be using XP pro).
I've been looking at the FAQs and the wiki.. and there's lots of information there.
i'm getting that these are the ordered steps (simplified) :
1) get the $50 ("scherzo"?) drivers from mike audet
2) install scherzo drivers
3) install updated pace drivers
4) download 3.0 (demo) from a link on the F.A.Q. page
5) obtain auth from i.d.
6) install paris
is this the general gist of things?
a few other questions :
question 1) is the pace auth expensive??? anyone done this recently and know how much?
question 2) i saw a note about ASIO drivers not being too terribly recent. is that somehting i need to be concerned about?
question 3) my purpose here is only to open some old paris projects and export them. do i NEED to install the "effects subsystem" in order to do that? this sounds like it's something that is for effects that i likely didn't use in my old projects (all were made in paris 2.0 or before)
question 4) since my purpose is simply to get projects into another format - do i need paris 3 ? i've heard there is an OMF export feature in 3 that will automoatically "bounce" all your audio events on a specific track to a single file with a 0:00 start. i definitely want to make use of that feature. that's only avail in 3.0 right?
ok.. i've fired a lot of questions out. thanks in advance for anyone who's willing to provide guidance.

Just being able to draw the eq curves whilst listening to the mix (ala Waves Ren EQ), made mixing a joy!
With all it's idiosyncrasies, Paris still floats my boat at the end of the day.
A customer is bringing a 15 channel instrumental Pro Tools mix. Is there anything tricky about that? I've always known it can be done; just never did it. Any advice will be appreciated. I am guessing I need him to bring a data disk with the 15 channel instrument P.T. mix which I am hoping will load into my Paris editor and look the same as any other Paris mix. Thanks for any advice.
I plan to turn the 15 channels into a sub mix and record their choir in it's own mix.

Check out any threads with AA Translator here on the forum?Going from PARIS to other DAWs is getting very simple but going *from* ProTools to PARIS, there still aren't a lot of really elegant, simple options.
The first, free solution (and from your perspective, easiest) is to get the client to render all tracks as individual WAVs starting from "zero". When you receive them, you strip out the BWF headers (a blot of data in the file that differentiates modern WAV files from the "old school" ones PARIS can read) using Reaper or StripWav and import them into PARIS, which will either import them directly (if they're 16 bit) or convert them to PAF on import (if they're 24-bit).
The second option is to
1) download Reaper,
2) take the ProTools session's Audio Files folder and import all the audio into Reaper, each file onto its own track,
3) "spot" each file into the location it was recorded into (say, a punched-in chorus vocal) and
4) render out the track, being sure to deselect the "use BWF headers" option. If you look around on the forum you'll find a script I wrote which automates this process; it's free, as is Reaper for a 30-day trial.
The third option is to purchase AATranslator. That'll translate from PT sessions to pretty much anything *except* a PARIS PPJ, but you should have no problems then opening the PT session in AATranslator, converting it to, say, a Reaper session, and rendering out the audio as in step 4) above. I can't say enough good things about AATranslator, but it *is* $159 for the enhanced version you'd need to pull this off. That's certainly an expense worth contemplating if you're going to be doing this a lot.
If you can get the cooperation of the client, the first option is the "no brainer" from your perspective. Thanks so much.
I am going to ask the other studio to chop off the front end of the stack off files too even, convert them to wave files and burn me a data disk.
I should have thought of that. But, for some reason I was never blessed with a 'flair for the obvious.'

Update: Took the fan off the heatsink, added a 4" fan on the top cover and lowered the fan V to 8VDC, much better and quieter.
Awesome. I've never owned a focusrite so was not aware of the problem. I completed the OS install last night. I went with 7 32. I will be installing PARIS shortly and will post results. what #s do you use ?I have 2 cards tied together, 2 Mecs ,2 C16s,I need to tie all this together and I haven't a clue. It's early and I haven't had my coffee yet and my head's in income tax return filing mode (meaning it's shove way up where the sun don't shine) but I think all you need is a 75 ohm BNC cable (RCA type) from MEC 1 out to MEC 2 in and you're done.
If your two EDS cards are tied together that should do it for inside the computer
If this info is wrong someone will point you in the right directionMaybe you should ask Mike if you could try testing his new ASIO drivers.
I've got Reaper running on top of Paris but have no real time to do any testing. It seems to work well on the playback end but can't comment on the recording end.

Hi Dimitrios - i might be wrong, but Im not sure that moving PARIS from a 32-bit environment to a 64-bit will unlock any more features or power or inherent functionality than moving from, say, Win2k to XP would have done.
My take on this is that like the XP drivers, it's more about knowing this is where it will all be going in the very near future (a 4 gig RAM limit? It's a wonder 32-bit systems have persisted this long). One day all too soon you'll look for stuff to upgrade or even maintain your system and the 32-bit stuff will be the harder-to-find/more expensive/limited choice/unsupported stuff. Difference is, this time we're going to be ready when that day arrives.I want to thank the fellows who are keeping Paris alive. Still dabbling after work and on weekends and such, wouldn't move willingly to a native system. It's startling how the industry hs accustomed itself to things we refused to tolerate 15 years ago, ie latency and limited track count etc. I feel the market is a giant sham right now, to a real extent.
Heck, I'm getting better sounds out of an old Yamaha TX81Z than anybody I've heard get out of all these ticky-tacky soft synths. Maybe I'm fooling myself...
Anyway, I'm buying Mike's plugins this weekend and these 64 drivers as soon as they're ready for prime time. Can maybe beta test if things are pretty close...course that would entail buying a new version of Windows, too...

TedHope the bump isn't considered inappropriate...anyone else had success getting v8 waves plugins (in my case it's Native Power Pack and GTR 3.5) to work with PARIS? I can use the shell2vst program to get individual ones to show but as noted above the graphics don't work properly, rendering them useless.I should add as I just realized how differently the VST plugins for Waves show in PARIS compared to other programs: I get a generic dialogue box no matter which Waves VST plugin I try, looking only slightly different in width but otherwise with the same controls on the right and a blank large window that just shows whatever was behind it and, if moved, moves that image around. Quite messed up. Whereas the VST plugins for Waves work fine in other programs (Cakewalk, Sonar).I am rrefering to the projest window....settings....configuration....Disc IO size, Disc Cache size, Overview Cache size and which numbers should work well with a dual core 2.8 Mhz amd on XP with 2 gig of ram. MarkSomething just struck me as I was running back through the process. The DLLs that the shell2vst program creates are 4 KB apiece, which seems too small given the original DLLs are quite large. Any thoughts? Perhaps Waves v8 doesn't work anymore with shell2vst? Apologies for so many posts but...eureka!
Thanks to Dimitrios though he doesn't know it; found a reference he made to Console. I tried that out and the DX version still works in PARIS, and from the DX version I could load the Waves v8 VST plugins! Roundabout, but that certainly works.
Still interested if anyone has other experiences, methods. Have you wrapped your plugs with a chainer? When they're wrapped and loaded thru FXPansion's FFX4 for instance, they no longer show up in Paris' VST window and load according to their own prescribed size.

I've rebooted; removed some suspect VST plugs, and trashed the OVW files, I've searched the wiki database but can't get it to open. I would create a new project and import the existing audio, but there are punch ins and their location is lost when doing so...

TedMaybe a corrupted audio file killing the PPJ during load? Make a subfolder in your Audio Files folder; drag all the audio files in and boot the song. If (after bitching about missing files) the song opens, that'd be the culprit.
If so, close it without saving, drag half of the sequestered files back to where they came from and reboot again. Lather, rinse, repeat, each time adding half the remnants back until you locate the culprit. Let me know if that has any effect...

Thanks; that's what Console essentially does. I'm not well experienced with VST or plugins in general, I used to be pretty well-versed in music tech but around 10 years ago I stopped keeping up, so pretty ignorant on some basics like this.
Console's pretty cool, it seems so far. OK that sounds good.
The other thing is that even wrapped, some of my VSTs are not sized correctly when pulled up, and there's a dialog box available during the install/scan process for formatting the window size correctly for any given plug.
Where can I check out Console?
TWell I've pursued this further and while I used to think the error message was connected to a corrupt file or project or Plug In, I am now thinking that it's caused by a particular saving sequence.
I'm pretty sure that the error has happened when I "Quit" then "Save" when prompted.
However, when I "save>close>quit" I can't get the error even when I have all the files and all the plugs I previously suspected included in the project.
Maybe this was long ago discovered by someone else already, but I'm new to PC so I'm still sussing these things out.
THi, it's probably easy to find but anyway I haven't figured out where the ASIO beta drivers are - can anyone please advise? (Yes, I did search the boards but nothing came up that indicated such)Now that's interesting.

Mike, thanks for your passion on this!I'm a little stumped but that's easy to do. I'm on Paris with a Mac. I want to switch over to PC but I was told I would need 5v PCI slots instead of the 3.3v. Where do I find this version of PCI slots or is this not important. My UAD-1 and Paris both work on the Mac PCI slots, But wanted to switch to a more powerful PC and make use of all the cool things happening in Paris.
Any help appreciated,

MichaelHowdy Michael. I'm also preparing to move my PARIS rig from Mac G4 to PC sometime soon. There are still many motherboards available with a PCI slot or two, so firstly you will need to consider how many EDS cards you want to use.
A 1 or 2 EDS card system will be relatively easy, but if you want to put together a 3 or 4 card system, then you will find that very few modern MoBo's have 3 or 4 PCI slots. You should be prepared to spend some time hunting for a 3 or 4 PCI slot board or consider an external expansion chassis such a Magna or VirtuaVia which are available in 4, 5 or 7 PCI slot models. This would allow you to use an easy-to-find MoBo with 1 or 2 PCI slots.

Yes, I have a 2 EDS card system I'm using on the Mac. I gotcha, so basically it's better to just build your own rig for Paris, modifying as you need it, yes? I have a nice i5 I use here at the house but it has PCIe slots. Could I just add an external expansion chassis to this system?

agma and Virtuavia have a PCI-e host to PCI card option, which would allow you to use your i5 computer for EDS cards.
Virtuavia have received a lot of love on this forum over the last couple of years as they're cheaper and smaller in size than Magma chassis and they work well.
I have an older 5-slot Magma PCI chassis which I have been using with my G4, but I have lined up a 4 PCI slot Gigabyte MoBo for my Windows build, similar to Kim W's build, with help and advice from Kim W. Hi,
I just upgraded my atx pc with a ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 - AM3 ATX motherboard and AMD Athlon II 455 X3 processor. The Mobo has 3 pci slots and I am using 2x eds1000. I'm very happy with the performance of the system with paris, Reaper along with the various midi vsti and vst plugins.
I have wondered this too, since I have had some popping issues normally associated with WC problems when trying to use an ADAT device as WC Master.
The manual does not distinguish between S/PDIF and ADAT as a Master when "Digital" is selected in the Project Window, yet the MEC chassis itself lists both "S/PDIF" and "Module" as clock sources. Presumably "Module" refers to an ADAT input.
Pretty sure I have not had success when trying to set an ADAT input device as Master.
Interestingly, in Ch 4 - The Patch Bay - it says that when Paris sees audio coming from an external digital device, it will automatically switch Clock source to "Digital".

Years back, many asserted that the 4 bits lopped off through Paris ADAT input modules were not noticed. I certainly found the sound of the SSL Alpha Link ADAT converters hooked up to Paris for external processing slightly more open, clear, smooth etc than using the Paris 8in/out converters, yet I could not get around popping issues, presumably WC problems, so I had to abandon it. Maybe I would have liked the Alpha Link even more if the Paris ADAT was 24 bit.
This is why I and others are so interested in Doug Wellington's 16 channel 24 bit ADAT interface that can connect directly to the C-16 card. Unfortunately, that project is currently stalled by a lack of available parts.
I use a Lavry AD box for all input, since I usually record 2 tracks at a time. When tracking drums, I find the Lavry for OHs, plus the Paris for close miking (I augment snare, toms, kick anyway) to be pretty darn good.
I also used the Universal Audio 2 ch ADDA for a while. Really nice. Like Paris mojo with a double dose of clarity, but I just couldn't afford 3K for 2 channels of in/out.
